Just enjoying second night of four potstill minis .Planning /hoping to have a dry Lent .( and loose a few pounds by giving up sugar also ) .So these are a ‘last hurrah’.Posted something about these last night but got ‘lost’ -a recurrent Boards issue at least a decade old :-( .Anyway not a shadow of a doubt the GreenSpot and RB are the ‘also rans ‘ .Preferred the Spot last night but surprised to prefer RB tonight .Is that because I drunk IT first tonight . John’s Lane Second but Barry Crockett romps home . Last night I drunk them one by one but tonight having despatched the cheapies (!) I’m alternating sips of the two best .It’s a bit like having a Magnum choc ice in one hand and a Solera Mango ice Lolly in the other ! I said last night I reckoned the BC WAS worth 3+ times cost of Johns Lane .I haven’t changed my mind .This set is great craic over two nights so you can experiment with what you’ve eaten before etc .I think they still have them at €35 something in Celbridge SuperValu and it’s worth asking if not on shelf as the manager got me one from stores

I think that'll be a long way off. People seem happy with the rise in Irish whiskey, that they won't want to rock the boat.

TBH I dont think its fair on distilleries who sell their own juice (Dingle, Waterford etc) that there is absolutely no differentiation from another distillery who just sells Bushmills or Cooley that is recasked and rebranded as their own whiskey. There should be something on the bottle to say where the original whiskey was distilled.

yeah, you're right. I often just think of it in terms of people like us, who already realise that the liquid is sourced. There's so many people who just don't understand that.

Isn't it law in the US that the state where it is produced has to go on the label? I remember reading about one massive producer of liquid, that's based in a particular state, so you can tell if a brands liquid is made by them, as the state is printed on the label.

I know it’s not whiskey but I’m not sure where else to post. I picked up a bottle of Hennessy X.O in Tesco for €75 which I think is a great deal.

That's crazy as I've literally just poured a glass of it. That's a mad price. Celtic Whiskey are charging €205 for it. Stunning colour on it.

I’ve only ever had the VSOP in the past as I’d rather spend that kind of money on a whiskey. I saw it today for €10 more than the VSOP so I grabbed it.

Reduced by more than halfprice... save €77!

Think thats the biggest single price drop I have ever seen for booze.

I wouldn't mind I was in Tesco Liffey Valley today and had a mooch in the spirits section and didn't see that!

    Incredible value. Unheard of!

Not tried too many cognacs before. Really enjoyed it. At that price I'll pick up a bottle tomorrow.

It's fabulous stuff. No-brainer to pick that up.

The Kilbeggan Single Grain NAS can wait another week I guess!

I hope you're doing the calvados tasting while you're at it?

When I was in Tesco it was fascinating to look at the shelf labels goe back to RRP.

I fairly hammered through that Powers 1L last weekend during the superbowl making Irish coffees to beat the band. Perfect dram for it!

I had gotten for 25euro before Christmas and to see it for 44 rodya was crazy!

That would be the added caramel colouring.

No I have to pick the tastings strategically to keep the missus onboard. Money doesn't matter as much as time these days. I have a few mini bottles of calvados to try in the collection. You doing it?

Some Jura 21 year old. Nice sweetness with subtle amount of peat. A nice drop.

I am, as I am trying to get the missus onboard. Rum, brandy/cognac/calvados are proving to be the tusted routes at present.

2 years ago I was in tesco and saw this on offer, reduced to clear for........wait for it.......€45!!
At the time it was *only* €150!!
My only regret was there was 2 bottles on the shelf and I only took one!!
I did not make that same mistake this time!!

Very much so. It was her birthday so an excuse to sneak in some good ones. Not so fine this morning minding the baby since 7am though!

It has the colour of a 25 year plus glendronach or glengoyne. Looked it up and it seems caramel is rampant in the Cognac industry. Disappointing.

    Rampant in rum too.

I need to update my 'review/recall' of the Bristol Rums tasting.

Their director who was on the tasting, John Barret said that in a lot of cases for some of their classic styles that the colouring is customer led. It was refreshing to hear the honesty and the openness about the process.

I'll get on that review later.

I don't mind caramel colouring in rum as much, I think the flavour at least compliments usually but I've a biottle of Remy Martin VSOP sitting open about 14 months now with a barely a drop touched because I think the caramel ruins it.

Just picked one up. It was showing full price on the shelf and the guy stocking wasn't aware of the reduction but it scanned at €75.

Snap! None on the shelf but there was one in the stores with no box.

Edit. I had a €25 one for all voucher leftover from xmas so it only cost me €50 in cash. Bargain!

2 left on the shelf in Roxborro, Limerick. ;)

Never got into brandy. Used to drink it sometimes when I was locked with diet coke and it wasn't unpleasant.

I'd have a general idea of what I like and what to look for in whiskey. What does brandy bring to the table and what should I be looking for when I drink it?

Using up yesterday's pancake day leftovers on a sour

3 parts whiskey (Connemara for me)
2 parts lemon juice (possibly a fraction too much)
    1 part maple syrup
    Pinch of cinnamon

    Shaken with ice. It's delicious!

As someone in the industry, I'd love to rock that boat. In fact, I'd like to turn it over!

I literally just remembered my €40 one.for.all voucher. Sake.

Grabbed a bottle earlier anyway. Nice bonus birthday present for herself next week. :) Win win!
