Cargo jet returns to Shannon with engine problem (Clare Herald)

A U.S. bound cargo jet was forced to return to Shannon Airport this afternoon after suffering an engine issue on departure.

The Air ACT Cargo flight took off from Shannon shortly before 1.00pm and was destined for Chicago having arrived earlier from Istanbul in Turkey for a refuelling stop. The flight was operating on behalf of Turkish Airlines Cargo.

US military troops travelling into Shannon breached Covid-19 rules (Irish Times)

US military troops travelling into Shannon Airport on a recent flight breached Irish Covid-19 regulations due to an “error on the US side,” Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney has said.

The flight, which included five crew and 48 US military personnel, landed at Shannon from Bahrain on January 25th. Those on board then stayed in a Limerick hotel overnight, leaving at one point to buy food, before flying on to the US the following day.

At the time all passengers were required to present a negative Covid-19 PCR test on arrival in Ireland, and complete a passenger locator form.

One would expect that such stopovers would be better organized.

It's one out of how many stops, no big deal really.

I saw that take off and I was convinced I saw a flash from engine 2 just after she got airborne. Looks like I wasn't imagining it then. I had to head back to work though so I hadn't realised she had to return.

    Yup, engine 2. http://avherald.com/h?article=4e317cf2&opt=0

Shannon Group plc has today welcomed the appointment of Aaron Forde as the new Chairman designate of the Board of Shannon Group.

He has good commercial experience but no aviation experience. Maybe that is what they need right now?

Wow. Not free to hold opinions now. His twitter is deleted so can’t see what it was. He has an agri background so maybe he criticized Green policies previously?
Either way it’s a disgrace, something you’d see in North Korea

Some more details, but still no content of the actual tweets:

“Mr Forde deleted his social media account after independent.ie asked him about comments he made about the Green Party, Tánaiste Leo Varadkar and social welfare recipients.

The agri-food businessman said he “did not recall” tweets about social welfare recipients.”

Government really are below par. Announce vaccination centers list with some having no agreement. Now none of Ryan's many advisers checked this guy out. He had issues with welfare, the whole agri sector is welfare on steroids

If they thought he was the best person for the job ( and he must have been, seeing as he was the one they selected) god help whoever does get the position. Always be rated as second choice.

In fairness, the comments and specific wording he used about Travellers are not the kinds of comments the CEO of a semi-state body should be making. That said, this should have been spotted long before he was appointed. Bit of a mess all round.

It beggars belief how the civil service apparently does no due diligence on people being appointed to state boards. At a minimum, in this day and age, you would assume that they would ask them for details of all their public social media accounts and check them as part of the vetting process.

Amazing how they could pull up any number of historical tweets from Shinners when it suits them though. A complete mess that they didn’t check this before announcing, an embarrassment actually

"Those who break faith with the unity shall go down into darkness."
It's fascinating and terrifying to see how far we have come just to arrive back at the same position.
All who do not subscribe to the current orthodoxy shall be burned at the public stake.

Aer Lingus to lay-off 129 staff at Shannon Airport for three months (RTE)

Aer Lingus is to temporarily lay-off its 129 ground and cabin crew staff at Shannon Airport for three months, from Monday next, 8 March, until June.

The aviation sector has been particularly badly hit by the Covid health crisis, and there has been no Aer Lingus flights from Shannon since last April.

Ya Timmy Dooley complaining about '.... doing this to loyal staff'. I mean ... is there a better job out there than working for Aer Lingus?? Nearly/probably better than the Civil Service with the perks etc.....

I'd love to know what his proposal is for what to do with the staff members. They've been getting paid for the last 10 months with zero flights.

    Paper never refused ink.
Timmy just "commenting" to keep himself in the public eye.
    Politics 101.
When is the next general election likely to be held.

Actually doing some useful for the staff is a secondary concern.

Timmy didn’t care too much for the loyal staff at Shannon when he voted to move the heathrow slots in 2007

Aercap confirms €25bn deal to create world’s biggest aircraft lessor (Irish Times)

Irish-based group’s purchase will create fleet of 2,000 planes and 300 helicopters

Irish aircraft lessor Aercap is poised to create the biggest business in its industry by the end of this year after agreeing to buy rival GE Capital Aviation Services (GECAS) for €25 billion.

Dublin-based Aercap confirmed on Wednesday it has entered a “definitive” agreement with GECAS’s owner US multinational General Electric (GE) to buy the aircraft leasing business, whose main office is in Shannon, Co Clare, for $30 billion (€25 billion) in cash and shares.

The transaction will give Aercap, which buys aircraft to lease to airlines around the world, more than 2,000 planes, 300 helicopters and 900 engines, about 3,200 individual assets in all.

Aercap’s takeover will see GECAS circle back into Irish ownership. The business grew from GE’s purchase of Irish aircraft leasing giant Guinness Peat Aviation (GPA), brainchild of Ryanair founder Tony Ryan, following its failed stock market flotation in the mid-1990s.

Aengus Kelly, Aercap chief executive, said the Dublin-headquartered group was “excited” at the opportunity to bring together two leaders in aircraft leasing.

“As the recovery in air travel gathers pace, this transaction represents a unique opportunity that we believe will create long-term value for our investors,” added Mr Kelly.

GECAS has its headquarters in Shannon and Aercap has its headquarters in Dublin.

Although Aercap has an office in Shannon, I fear these takeovers usually mean job losses and loss of influence for Shannon.

Shannon’s cargo hub set for 2022 as it tries to lure Amazon (Irish Independent)

Shannon Airport hopes to start construction of its new cargo hub early next year, after launching a tender process this week to hire architects for the scheme.

The Irish Independent revealed last month that Shannon Group has been in talks with Amazon about the possibility of the internet giant establishing a major distribution facility and other infrastructure at the airport.

The talks are understood to be at an advanced stage and the new cargo hub at Shannon Airport could help to entice the online retailer.

The cargo hub at Shannon will be located right beside the airport’s apron on a four-acre site. It will include a direct connection to an existing airfield taxiway at the airport.

“The development will incorporate a large 29,708 sq ft distribution facility building with 3,767 sq ft single-storey office ‘ready for occupation’ including all site development and car parking works,” Shannon Group has noted in its request for tenders.

“It is intended that the buildings will be multi-functioning and adaptable to modern business uses," it said.

Shannon Group expects to have a planning application for the facility submitted by this summer, with construction slated to begin during the first quarter of 2022.

Tenders for the construction work are expected to be sought in September and October this year, with construction taking about 10 months.

It was reported earlier this year that Amazon is also poised to rent property in Dublin to use as a fulfilment centre.

That would be its first such operation in Ireland and would help the retailer to bypass issues caused by Brexit in servicing the Irish market. The 650,000 sq ft facility is located close to Baldonnell airfield.

It’s believed that the plans under consideration by Amazon for Shannon Airport would involve a distribution node rather than a fulfilment operation.

Both Shannon Group and Amazon have declined to comment on discussions they’re having.

However, Shannon Group previously confirmed it’s been working on plans for the cargo hub.

“Shannon Group is uniquely positioned in that it has a significant supply of landside/airside development sites suitable for distribution of goods by both air and road,” said a spokesperson for the group last month.

In the past five years, Shannon Group has delivered one million square feet of new and refurbished aviation, office and manufacturing facilities.

Tenants to move to the Shannon Free Zone have included Jaguar Land Rover, Edward Lifesciences and MeiraGtx, a clinical-stage gene therapy company.

I think this article puts the "Amazon Project" into perspective, the Dublin proposal is 20 times larger than what is planned for Shannon.

A lot of property deals seem to be in motion in Shannon which is great. Veritiv 134,170 sq ft building on about 7.3 acres seems to have come down off daft anyway, did it sell?
