quick question, slightly off topic. Do all ISP providers have their own routers? e.g when I was with Eir, I had their branded Huawei router. I'm now with Digiweb and they provided a Fritzbox, which I really like.

So, if I was to move to another provider would I have to take their router?

If it is a standard Fritz!Box and not locked down by the ISP then it should be usable for other ISPs provided they give you the credentials to make the connection.
A number of ISPs now use the Ftitz!Box routers.

Smaller ISPs tend to use off the shelf units. When you're bigger the annual cost of a provisioning gateway etc is cheaper due to scale.

    They're throttling us. Simple.

I'd say so. Previously with VF and now with EIR. Both 100mb. Was getting far lower speeds with VF than I do now.

Anyone on Virgin Media’s 500Mb connection? I’m interested to see peak time wired speeds and pings. (I checked this thread but there aren’t many recent examples...)

    Thanks for any help!

I'm on the 360 and it never drops speed, I often get more than 360.
Wireless test with my own router https://www.speedtest.net/my-result/d/f1af4551-32bc-4fb2-9970-59733e7a23ec
Done on the app on my laptop W10.

Just got Vodafone 1Gb FTTH installed. Getting approx 450-500Mb with speedtest. Would I still get 450-500Mb if dropped to their cheaper 500Mb offer?

are you on wifi or connected by cable you should be getting more

you'd go from 100mb upload to 50 even if you didn't notice much of the wifi speed change if you went down to 500

Thanks-great speeds. Wonder if it’s common to see more than the advertised speed...

Is you connected hardware capable of 1Gb/s?

If so then contact Vodafone and tell them ...... maybe you are on wrong profile.

Did a test at 1am and got ~900Mb so its probably contention alright during the day.

It does not know what's faster. 5 GHz is not always the best choice. You have to make the choice.

I seem to be on 5G on the phone.
    (Tried 2.4, no better)

Maybe this new router is just crap at sending the WiFi signal

I'm on eir 1Gigabit, have never seen anything over 500, and that's with a cat 5e cable plugged directly into the eir box, spoke with them and they said it was my laptop and that I should try the test with an Alienware.. I have a Dell 7380, it has a gigabit card

The wifi has never gone above 300 since day 1, any ideas how I can optimise, or get closer to what I am paying for?

Just moved providers from sky to pure and I'm still only getting 8-30 at this time of the evening. Really struggling to u derstand how FTTH could be this bad. I'd accept congestion but I'm seeing massive jitter in the evenings as well so gaming etc is really not possible.
