What's eh about it, all restrictions were never lifted in Ireland. Pubs, offices, the entire entertainment industry, tourism etc never reopened at all. Even with under 50 cases a day.

Has reality become so warped for people that they celebrate being "allowed" to walk 5.001km from home as a grand reopening?

Most places were reopened though. Just saying we never reopened, without qualification, is just wrong. Even the pubs you mentioned were reopened everywhere except Dublin.

I'm not sure what your second paragraph refers to. It's got nothing to do with my, 'eh?' anyway...

The previous poster implied restrictions were lifted in June, as in reopened properly and entirely. This is without qualification, disingenuous and just factually incorrect.

Ireland did not reopen. Some restrictions were temporarily partially lifted. For example pubs being allowed to serve with extremely limited capacity, a ridiculous 9€ meal requirement, time limits on each table and reduced hours - this won't keep them afloat and for me is not 'reopening' of social activity. That's not something to be satisfied with.

As mentioned too the entire entertainment industry never opened at all. So to say Ireland reopened in June is just not true.

This is particularly relevant now as people call for ridiculous stuff like under 20 cases per day
We've already seen that last June, and restrictions stay.

To say we never reopened isn't true either in that case.

Pubs were able to serve alcohol without the food requirement in September/October without time limits too.

    Not in Dublin Pen.

It's fair to say we had some partial lifting of some restrictions but not nationwide. Dublin hasn't been below the equivalent of Level 3 since last March. That's a long bloody time man.

I suppose that would depend on your definition of reopened. For me, it's reopened when restrictions are lifted, not partially opened with half measures.

Yeah, we did have a lifting of restrictions nationwide. You said so in your post. If Dublin was at Level 3, it had restrictions lifted.

I'm not disputing that it's a long time. It is.

They’re talking about increasing to 10km - I’m expecting to hear a lot of talking about that as if you now have your freedom back. And scorn at those that still aren’t happy, like there’s something wrong with you. 5km or 10km of **** roads makes no difference to me.

Irish Times: The Government’s new strategy for living with Covid-19 will set out plans for a staggered return of construction and a slow return to schooling while maintaining a prohibition on indoor house visits and hospitality.

The new plan is in the early stages of being drafted and sources involved in the process say that while no dates will be explicitly set out for the reopening of society and economy, increased vaccinations should allow for progress in May or June.

Industry sources believe that the hospitality sector may only begin reopening on an outdoor basis from the May bank holiday onwards with a phased reopening for indoor settings as the summer months progress, depending on the level of virus in circulation.

Lockdowns favour the rich over the poor and the old over the young.

She also claimed the virus doesn't exist...

She has a lot of opinions that are ridiculous. That doesn't mean that it is in any way rational to allow her to essentially steal one's own sense of reality. Many here would deny that the sky looks blue on a clear day, had Gemma O'Doherty gone on record to say it last week. It's a ridiculous amount of power and attention to give to someone whose goal seems to be power and attention.

And Gemma O'Doherty claiming ridiculous things in court last year does not change the fact that our government, by refusing to send a very clear message about the importance of vitamin D, both as preventative and as therapeutic treatments for Covid-19, has cost (and continues to cost) many, many lives.

We're not talking a small difference, either. We're talking about people with adequate levels of vitamin D being half as likely to die from Covid-19. Half.

I remain in anticipation of any of the anti-anti-lockdown crowd joining me in my condemnation of the government for that fact, being clear about whether they believe it's malice or incompetence (they really are the only options), and then explaining to me why they believe it is irrational to assume that that same malice or incompetence might carry over to other strategies the government is implementing.

If the argument is that I ought to fully trust a government and health advisory committee that have, by the omission of advice or information, knowingly allowed unnecessary deaths to occur for almost a year now from the same disease they are ostensibly attempting to save me from, then fine. Just say that. I'd disagree, but the honesty would at least be refreshing.

What - you have never been in Dublin city centre and enjoyed the various beatiful outdoor eating settings on the wide boulevards all over the city? When the guaranteed 4 months of gorgeous dry weather comes every year the place is usually packed with happy punters dining in the fresh air.

Sadly you're probably right. But I hope the government comes under enormous pressure long before that, as the most vulnerable will have been vaccinated and the UK and countries in Europe mostly be free nations by then.

Pubs and such like will open again just in time for the annual licence renewal time.will be interesting to see how many will renew.there are too many bank holidays coming fast so after Easter it will be shoved out to after the may one then June etc.

I suspect ShyMets is correct - I think they'll drag the outdoor crap as long as they can and the warmer weather of june/july/aug will facilitate this.

They are intent on making our lives as difficult as possible to suit their new zealand agenda.

Irish Independent: 'We'd have to have critical mass vaccinated' - pubs, hotels and restaurants set to stay shut for several more months

Pubs, restaurants, hotels and cafes are facing shutdown for several more months as Taoiseach Micheál Martin warned a “critical mass” of the population must be vaccinated first with further Government supports then needed to “reboot” the industry.

Ireland has lost an estimated 150,000 hospitality jobs as the Level 5 pandemic restrictions cost the €9bn industry two of its biggest annual spending events – New Year and St Valentine’s Day.

Vintners believe an alarming number of family-run pubs may never reopen.

after the over 65 are done with the vaccine , they have no excuse for any restrictions so expect a "godzilla" variant to appear which has a "long covid" affect of turning us all into Bill Gates clones to appear just at that point.

Can you call it a “plan” if there are no dates or metrics involved?

Might as well just say that we hope cases will get really low and stay that way

Based on the May for outdoor dining (lol at that concept in Ireland) that would suggest it'll be into May when they will allow us to venture to the border of our own county. Such a crazy undertaking!
I'd assume then they will remove the country thing and open the food only pubs and restaurants from 6-8 weeks later and start banging the #staycation drum and telling us to support local hospitality.
It'll be interesting to see how it goes when the people who have been conditioned to hate anybody that goes to a restaurant, meets people etc. for a whole year are then looking at crowds of people cramming into the same scenic places around Ireland (as per government advice). Fun times ahead :pac:
