I think they are a fantastic looking car. They weren't a bad yoke either.

Found this old Scammel Scarab artic trailer on a farm recently. It's an ex CIE trailer that originally had an aluminium body with side roller doors. It's going for scrap soon, but a cool thing to find, a type of transport history long forgotten. It's pretty rough.

I think they have a CIE Scarab in the museum in Howth.

Here's the Scammell Scarab in Howth, that would have pulled that trailer, if anyone's never seen one.
I (just about) remember these in 70's Dublin - Guinness's had them too.

I'd forgotten about the transport museum.
That's one for the list when all this BS is over.

^^ re the Scammell, I vaguely remember them too, but only after I googled them and seeing the pic Type 17 posted. Very cool little machine.
is that a PTO or some sort of drive showing in Testacalda's first photo?
Were the trailer wheels driven from the tractor unit?

Ah, so that’s a flanged wheel not a pto.

The automatic connection of the lights and breaks sounds like a nightmare. Can’t see it working after a couple of years without constant maintenance.

It was actually one of the last things I did before lockdown properly hit last year.

Went out there on a Saturday morning (7th March) and then up the hill to McNeill's to watch England v Wales and have an ungodly amount of pints and then back to town about 10. My god they were halcyon days.

The way things are going, that will become a cherished memory for you, transport museum, match and pints! Thing of envy! 😂

Came across this yesterday on Daft. Looks like a 100E popular buried in the undergrowth.

In the aerial photo (picture 12) there looks to be another car behind the house, can anyone identify it?

    "DON'T LOOK IN THE BOOT"

All that time working next door to that and I had no idea what was inside.

There was a gem of a black green 440 or 460 that used lived outside that gaff as well! I wonder if it replaced that "barn-find".

    EDIT: checked streetview

Hah, thats gas. I'd say the 460 replaced the 360 alright. You must knock in when you're next there and ask if they wanna sell the Volvo :pac:

Spotted in Tuam today, not exactly classics but still rare enough. These could
possibly be facing the claw I fear

The 305 is definitely a classic at 42 years old.

Pity if it's crushed with all the useful parts.

A buddy of mine sent me this today. Said the roof of the shed it was in had collapsed on top of it, and despite it being pretty rust free, it was a write off now. An automatic renault 11.

Barn Find Crushed By Barn :)

Far from the first time that's happened.
I can't find it on Google, but I remember seeing photos of a barn somewhere in Europe full of classics where the roof collapsed.

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,081 ✭✭✭✭elperello

It happened to an acquaintance who went away for six months and came back to find the shed roof had fallen in on his pride and joy.

He jacked up the roof, pushed it out and following a delay while charging the battery was back on the road by evening.

Mind you it was a Pajero.

The National Transport Museum in Howth said nothing on it's website about still being closed due to COVID.
Called in on Sunday, but signs say it's not reopening until this coming weekend.

These were parked out the front:
