sorry if this has been asked before but if you have a solar array and a battery in the event of a power cut can the battery be used to power a limited amount of the house?

    Yes*

So there is an eps output on most hybrid inverters.

Usually wired into a double socket. Depending on the inverter, (for instance the one I have) only goes live if there is no grid power.

Moving further on, sub boards could be made and a generator switch could be installed.. things start to get pricey then.

I think you need what's called an anti islanding device. Basically in the event of a power cut, the ESB needs to ensure there's nothing generating power in the affected area, otherwise some poor engineer might get electrocuted while fixing the fault

Many solar PV systems have an automated cut out to switch off in the event of a power cut for this reason.

An anti islanding device will basically isolate your house from the grid if there's an issue on the grid. This allows your house PV and battery system to safely supply you with power during the outage
