Cost of Rib Roast

    Hi all

I’m cooking a rolled rib roast for lunch on Saturday to celebrate the start of the 6Nations.

I have to say - I’m a little shocked at the prices.

Online you can see prices for about €15-18/kg. Two local butchers in Stillorgan/Mount Merrion are €34/kg. Whereas SuperValu is €16/kg.

Over twice the price for the same product. I’m sure there are good reasons for the price difference but 100% seems like a lot. And regardless of whether it isn’t - the price is the price.

    Any comments or insights? Thanks.

€34/kg seems a bonkers price for rolled rib.
It would want to be seriously premium, extra aged for that money.
Lidl do very good beef rib on the bone for very reasonable money.

If I wanted a special piece of beef for roasting, I'd go for a rib on the bone or a sirloin roast.

I suspect that the not so good looking ribs get boned and rolled. I've never been a fan of that cut - far too often stringy and not very tender.

For a laugh, why not ask the butcher why his rolled rib is twice the price of the supermarket?

Some people think that all butchers have superior meat to supermarkets. This just isn't true. A really good butcher will have a more premium product, generally but most butchers sell exactly the same stuff as supermarkets but people will pay more for it from a butchers, assuming better quality.

I am tempted. They get all these ‘best family butcher’ awards. But I find them incredibly expensive and I really don’t find any taste difference.

Thanks for that. Thought the boned and rolled would be a good enough cut. Thanks for advice

Well, now you say it SuperValu have a deal on their rib on the bone at €11.50kg. Deal finished tomorrow.

Would it be ok in the fridge until Saturday?

How would that affect the timings?

I'm afraid food advice isn't allowed.

That's a very good deal though.
Generally it's better to take meat out of plastic if keeping in the fridge for a few days.

Should cook the same by weight.

Most butchers are meat unpackers/displayers these days. As you say yer not getting a premium product.

First they came for the socialists...

Well got quite the surprise when our local supervalu changed from a butcher counter to packed meat.

Eye of the round - delicious
Rolled rib roast - tasteless, fell apart when cut as rolled, and pretty tough.
