Do none of the borrowers not know there's no free money when you borrow?
It reminds me of people taking out variable mortgages and then complaining when the rates go up.

I hope when I am 75 and want to enjoy retirement and have my own house I can get a LIFE LOAN to go off on a year long cruise.

in fairness these loans are almost loan shark levels of interest, just without the threat of losing your knees

    some bathroom for 45k

I've recently started watching property porn videos on YouTube - American Realtors selling trophy houses and doing tours of same. One "apartment" in Miami had over US$2million spent on the bathroom. It was very nice in fairness, but I'm not sure even if I had the money I'd go to those extremes.

I'm wondering If these people thought they didnt have to pay any interest at all.

You just know by the sons and daughters ringing in that they got a nice chunk of the parents loan.

Irish people appear to be a lot dumber when it comes to money, or at least they hate paying it back.

Its time our youngsters were taught about personal finance in schools, if they aren't already.

And throwing out a "we bailed out the banks" doesn't mean you should get a loan you took out cancelled for free.

Tomorrow...people who took out interest only mortgages surprised they need to pay the full amount at the end of the term.

Either their parents weren't honest about what they borrowed or those putting on the beal bocht want to make themselves sound worse off.
Selling a house after a death is a common occurrence. I don't know why the callers frame it as a terrible outcome.

Surely if you take out one of these loans, you are told that the 42k will be 137k after 15 years?

The caller Brendan said as much.

Examples of what's owed at 5, 10 and 15 years were in the brochure back in the early 2000's.

My parents always drilled into us that while taking out a loan can be a finacially wise choice it HAS to be paid back and savings from your earnings are non negotiable.

They would laugh at the notion of borrowing against their home for a holiday, wedding or home improvements.

My siblings and I all paid for our own weddings. Borrowing money for party FFS.

I remember my mortgage being over 16%. If I took out one of those loans I’d have to buy a second house to surrender with my own to clear the debt.

Our Joe is a big fan of the infantilisation of people where financial matters are concerned and personal responsibility never comes into it, some utopia he lives in where actions dont have consequences and the money tree never runs dry

He has a bee in his bonnet over lost investments, and I bet Bank of Ireland comes into it somewhere, where he didn't read the small print, or that some investment he helped initiate for his mother didn't go as planned.

I always remember the compound interest lesson at school, where we were reminded that loans could be costly... that was back in early 70s.
