    Friday 1st

Fab sunny day with little or no wind. Set off with no real route in mind – plenty of scope within the 5k radius, I am so glad they didn’t revert to 2k. Ended up running along the new greenway section of the Royal Canal from North Strand to Sheriff Street (this section will cut about 5 mins off my cycle commute if/when I go back to the office, and the added bonus of a brief reprieve from engine fumes), past the Point or whatever it’s called these days, into the Port and back through East Point along the sea and Fairview Park.

    5 miles @ 9:12 min/mile, average HR 141

    Saturday 2nd

Online Pilates class this morning, then an easy 3 on a mix of grass/trail/path. A shout out from Denis_b en route :).

    3 miles @ 9:46 min/mile, average HR 129

    Sunday 3rd

Left this until the afternoon to avoid going splat on the ice. Thanks to aquinn for the route suggestion which included a new (to me) section of Tolka Valley Park. Not a flat route but at least the second half along the canal was all downhill :D.

Rumblings of 2k mentioned on the radio earlier.... I really wish they'd exclude solo exercise outings in these limits. What harm is a solo runner/walker/cyclist going to do out for a spin/run/hike!! Nice to see that work on the Royal Canal Greenway is progressing.

Yeah I heard that just after I wrote it. Hope I didn't jinx it . The new section of the Greenway is quite short, maybe half a mile or so, but nice and peaceful. And within 2Km

Some familiar routes mentioned here. I’m a fan of the new greenway section too. Wish it was all like that, although it’s pretty good now all the way from the Liffey to Castleknock. Wonder how they’ll get a walking/cycle path around the ‘Deep Sinking’. When all this is over we’ll have to get the D3 Cru/Shams band back together for an outing!

Interesting...hadn't heard of the Deep Sinking (I've never run past Ashtown) so googled it. Link here for anyone interested. I'm guessing it's runnable but possibly slightly treacherous when wet ?

I'll add that outing to the (growing!) list of Things To Do When We Are Back to Normal :D

What a brilliant blog that is - thanks for that link, it's all very up to date.

I've run and cycled the Deep Sinking section - it's not that bad at all, especially for an experienced trail runner like yourself. Can be a bit slippery alright, but the bigger problem I've encountered is overgrown vegetation making the narrow passage even narrower. They Council (or probably more likely the Waterways Ireland people) cut it way back every so often, making things much easier.

I love the Royal Canal - have run to beyond Clonsilla from the Dublin direction, and from the Dublin/Kildare border to beyond Kilcock when I was working in Maynooth.

The last discussion I heard on this was the council were looking at developing the other side of the canal for that section, there was also a roundabout route that brings you off the canal but lots of vocal objections from the locals so they may not proceed with that.

FYI no cycling allowed on the deep sinking section :D.

@Bungy Girl you'd have no problem running it although definitely #slipperywhenwet

    Monday 4th

Nada except a scheduled visit to the physio to keep on top of my dodgy back and pre-empt any issues. All good. Got some new exercises and strict instruction on how to sit properly at my desk. No hunching, no slouching, no knee crossing, etc. All stuff I know I should do but forget about when I get caught up in work.

    Tuesday 5th

Speeds day . 5 x 800m @ 5k pace on the plan with 2 mins recovery. It’s supposed to be a jog recovery but I was in danger of bailing so I promised myself after 2 reps that I could walk the rest of the recoveries if I made the effort and completed the session :o. Target pace was 7:40 min/mile and reps came in at 7:30/7:34/7:36/7:27/7:23 - happy with that. Park was jammers, loads of dogs off the lead racing around like crazy and posing a trip hazard. I had to divert onto the mucky grass more than once. Owners oblivious. Or aware and couldn’t care less :(.

    5 miles @ 9:03 min/mile, average HR 152.

    Wednesday 6th

Serious juggling required from now on as both of us back to WFH after the holidays and no school . Calamity! Negotiated an escape for a 30 minute recovery run before lunch (should have been 4 miles) but had to cancel a planned online S&C class. This is rapidly becoming my least favourite lockdown . I’ll probably have to start getting up early to get my runs done, but that’s not very practical if it’s icy out.

    Thursday 7th

Not sure what sort of run this was. Somewhere between recovery and head wreck. But at least I got out, accompanied by my Mini-trainer on her bike, Rocky style. Not a route I’d have picked myself, involving as it did about 10 laps of the playground .

Did an online S&C/Pilates combo class earlier as well, will try to make this a habit.

    4.1 miles @ 9:58 min/mile, average HR 131

    Friday 8th

A simple out and back mainly on grass along the coast as the paths were frosty. One of those good to be alive runs in glorious sunshine :). Online Pilates class straight after.

    5 miles @ 9:37 min/mile, average HR 137

    Saturday 9th

Another amazing sunny day. Kicked it off with a Pilates class and followed with an easy run.

    4.3 miles @ 9:36 min/mile, average HR 136

    Sunday 10th

Long run day. Did more or less the same route as last week, just changed the last mile so I wouldn’t have to run up and down my road like a loon to make up the distance. It’s a good route for a LSR because the 2nd half is much easier than the first. Noticeably less busy along the canal today until Drumcondra which was jammers. Cold and damp but enjoyable run.

Hi, it's a local studio doing online classes (classical Pilates). I've been going for a few years now https://www.pilatescentre.ie/

I've also just started to dip my toe into some S&C online. I've no link but search for AshFit at Studio 99 on Facebook and you'll see the range of online classes (including Pilates). It's run by former boardsie dubgal72.

    Monday 11th

Groan! Tortuous stop & start run with BG Jr alongside on her bike. Home-schooling P.E. at its finest
    .
Online Pilates class at lunchtime too. My back is definitely feeling the benefit of the extra classes as well as my new home office set up :D.

    3.2 miles @10:33 min/mile, average HR 117

    Tuesday 12th

Hill reps. Same session and route as 2 weeks ago, just an extra rep this time. Target pace was 7:40 min mile and reps came in at 7:30/7:37/7:37/7:31/7:37/7:30 (all were within 2 seconds of each other so reasonably consistent :)), with jog back down the hill recovery. Encountered a large barky type dog on towards the end of the 5th rep so crossed the road to avoid it on the last rep, but the owner must have had the same idea and crossed to avoid me .

    Wednesday 13th

Online S&C class at lunchtime and a recovery plod in the evening in the dark on an uninspiring route

Nice, easy, short run. Legs still have a bit of DOMS after yesterday's S&C class.

    Friday 15th

Started the day with an early morning HIIT class. Tough but good. Definitely room for improvement :o. Usual lunchtime Pilates class. Get me and all the S&C, it must be January with the resolutions still intact :D. After dark by the time I got out for my run, 5 miles on a random route. Uneventful and enjoyable. Sushi for dinner, nom.

    Saturday 16th

Morning Pilates, didn’t really enjoy the class. I don’t like it when the instructor has us using props (in this case a tea towel), especially online. I find I waste a lot of time figuring out what’s going on whereas if they just stick to the routine I can do it by just listening without having to pay attention to the screen. Stayed close to home for my run, just loops on my go-to 1 mile circuit which is mainly grass/trail and a bit of tarmac. Very mucky today and gave me a hankering for XC races :pac::pac:.

    4 miles @ 9:34 min/mile, average HR 139

    Sunday 17th

LSR taking in some of DSS, more of which is in my 5K zone than I would have thought! Route included some of the canal, Docklands, Ringsend Park, Dublin Port, East Point and Fairview Park. Nice and peaceful, encountered very few dogs or Muggles.

I get the feeling there's always gonna be room for improvement, as soon as you master something, things are ramped up so there's no slacking :D:D

I aspire to your level of fitness where you can run and workout on the same day and multiple days of the week too!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,770 ✭✭✭✭Murph_D

Tea towel doesn't sound so bad, depending on what you have to do with it!

When I used to do pilates regularly in DCU, props were frowned upon by the (excellent) instructor, so I've never trusted them either.

    Muggles? Non-runners?

    Monday 18th

Lunchtime Pilates, overlapping with BG Jr’s school online maths class. Oh well, I’m sure it’s not the oddest thing the teacher has seen in the background of a Zoom call.

Recovery run before dinner. A very slow plod on tired legs.

    3 miles @10:28, average HR 127

    Tuesday 19th

Speeds . 6 x 800m @ 5K pace with 2 mins recovery. Not enough time to go to my usual location for intervals so ended up doing these along the main avenue in Fairview Park. Gloomy and wet so was hoping to have the park to myself but there were still some dog walkers about, with a few off the lead (the dogs that is, but wouldn’t rule out a lead for some of the owners all the same ).
This was tough from the outset. I find it hard to get the pace consistent and usually start off too fast or too slow, then struggle to even it out. These all ended up too fast, and I had to walk the recoveries when really I should be jogging them. Reps 1,3,5 were into the wind and felt much harder than the others. Had to stop in the middle of rep 5 as there were loose dogs ahead of me on the path and I got a bit nervous that I’d be tripped up. The extra rest was very welcome all the same!

Paces ended up being 7:32/7:31/7:27/7:22/7:16/7:29 min/mile.

    5 miles @ 9:23 min/mile, average HR 151

    Wednesday 20th

S&C class at lunchtime, hamstring was at me a little bit after being glued to the work chair all morning. Deadline day in work which is always mental.

Short run before dinner, felt easy but HR was a bit high for the pace.

    3 miles @9:45 min/mile average HR 138

    Thursday 21st

Nada. Due a rest day anyway and had a scheduled trip to the dentist which took up most of the afternoon. No harm giving the hamstring a break as it’s a bit twingy. Just feels tight rather than anything major so hopefully ok again by tomorrow. Realised I’m after running 16 days in a row which is a bit daft of me, although ‘running’ alongside BG Jr on her bike shouldn’t really count .

    Friday 22nd

Early morning HIIT class but I wasn’t feeling in the least bit perky at that ungodly hour. My back was a bit dodgy later so I don’t think plyometrics are a good idea for me just yet. I like the class so I’ll just opt for the low impact moves for now until my back is a bit stronger. Usual lunchtime Pilates class with a focus on opening up the hips today so there were some nice stretches.
It was dark by the time I got out for a run. Bitterly cold. The grass/trail along the promenade was too slippy to run on and half the lights were out so it wasn’t the most relaxing of runs. HR too high for that pace but legs were heavy after all the S&C.

So happy it’s the weekend, what a loooong week.

    5 miles @9:51 min/mile, average HR 139

    Saturday 23rd

Pilates after breakfast then helped BG Jr with her online Tae Kwon Do class, by acting as a punch bag. Braced the abs as best I could only to be told it felt ‘squishy’ :o. Note to self – do more core and stop eating all the things. Also, invest in some kick pads.

Awesome running weather in the afternoon when I got out. I may have discovered the perfect location for dog- and Muggle-free speedwork! Will do a proper discovery tomorrow and report back.

    4 miles @9:27 min/mile, average HR 137

    Sunday 24th

Got our for my LSR once the snow had stopped falling. Never really warmed up on the run so it was slow and legs felt heavy due to the cold but the HR was about right so that’s something at least. Checked out the potential speedwork location properly today and, working on the basis that it’s better to ask for forgiveness than permission (there is one small barrier to climb in close proximity to a security hut ), I think this will work well for reps up to 800m. Surface is compact trail and while it’s not completely flat the incline is very gradual. Looking forward to trying it out!

I think I know where you’re talking about. Not sure I’d use it for speedwork though, a bit narrow and bumpy? And not always muggle-free!
