Cr@p! You're projecting what you want to see.

No sane person would be happy with 23 deaths and over 1300 new cases.

Catch yourself on. Where do you think you've detected this? The media are all over the serious state we're in and emphasised that being Sunday the could would be lower.

Projecting what I want to see. Well thats a load of codswallop. No matter how you dress it up its a positive. Sunday or not. Especially whats gone before in recent weeks. And please don't reference media. They only accentuate the negatives.

A noticeable improvement in case figures. Fingers crossed that improvement continues.

I think we are around similar case numbers as October peak now -at start of lockdown 2. So a fair distance to go yet.

Case numbers were in the low hundreds before Christmas when we opened up

To be precise, there were 205 new cases on November 27th when the Government took the decision to ease restrictions. 725 new cases a month later on December 27th.

I might sound crazy but I detect an air of disappointment with figures being so low today. A disingenuous urge to caution and understated response. It confirms my suspicions that a cohort of Irish people enjoy the misery and would happily like some form of lockdown forever as everyone's lives ascend/descend to the mean.

Let's not delude ourselves here. The figures are not low. They are still very high. All indicators are good case wise. Hospital wise it remains to be seen how things will pan out.

Just like Gemma there probably are some looms who'd want everyone locked down permanently. Shouldn't really focus on them though. Especially if you have frustrations over lockdown as it's a disproportionate response that will only further feed your unease and send you down a rabbit hole.

The vast majority of us do not desire this. A poster put it best earlier: If one of us won the lotto what could we actually do?

That you'll be very disappointed if you think there will be a sudden easing of restrictions.

You’re right of course, figures are high.

Shows how bad it was when we see 1300 cases and think “that’s great”

Very bad figures for a Sunday....cant read too much into them...will have to wait until Tuesday to get a better idea of how its going.
    Pure nonsense.

Compared to the previous Sundays it's way down.

    17/01: 2944
    10/01: 6888
    03/01: 4962

Don't have to wait, you get a better idea by the 7-day average. 2125 today and Last week 3602.

Of course we can't but we will be until March, at the earliest. It's fairly obvious now that Government don't intend on easing the restrictions until a sizeable proportion of the country is vaccinated.

Good to see low numbers I think people are hesitant to be optimistic as If we relax the numbers rise etc. Hospital situation and deaths don't help also.
Vaccine appears effective in Israel which give I think is very promising

They will have to look at construction at the earliest opportunity. That and schools will be the first on the list. As for vaccinations keep an eye on the data from Israel.

It's all about opening up at the right time and what you open up.

It's not easy to get right as we saw at Christmas. I'd say Holohan and co are planning for St. Patrick's Day and festival. What do you do if you have 150 cases per day, the UK variant and others have to be taken into account. And the numbers vaccinated and what groups. A mild spell of 15/16c ensues we all meet for a few beers.

It's not easy planning, and it's a moveable target too!

I would hope if case numbers drop that far, we're reopening non essential retail, gyms, hairdressers etc. I do think it's nearly pointless to reopen hospitality after what happened. Opening things up for 4-5 weeks and locking everything down again is just pointless. Might as well reopen 80% of stuff and be able to keep them open until the vaccinations take hold.

Ya, no chance we have one bar the day off work. Easter and May back holiday are the two that will be interesting.

Nope. The prognosis is still the same for any fool who will pay 6 euro for a pint of overpriced slop that has been sitting in a barrel for 9 months, when you can get a fresh can of beer for a euro.
