Most of the snow here has thawed away and it hasn't gone above 1c, south east Cavan. Why has it thawed so easily? Is it because it was wer snow?

it thawed quickly due to wet snowfall last night, ground temperatures were not that cold as we had a fairly mild spell just days before. The ground here in Meath is still fairly soggy after all the rain earlier in the week. Sunny all day today so that was the icing on the cake for snow melt.

    There are a few factors:

    - If you are west facing your snow will melt quicker, because you have the sun facing you during the warmest part of the day.
    - If you are in the middle of a hill.
    - if there has not been a sustained frost.
    - If the snow is <5cm.

Generally you need about 3-4 inches of snow cover over all surfaces to sustain no melt in the sun.

Fair bit of thaw this afternoon but still about 2cm of snow in the garden and still snow on the footpaths. Definitely the best snowfall since 2018 today and our 4th snowfall day of this winter, certainly beats last couple of winters

Around December and January this tends not to be an issue so long as the snow rests on a frozen surface. Including just a dusting. If it's not frozen underneath it won't last long in any case.

Snow of any amount, regardless whether it's initially on a frozen surface, particularly on concrete or tarmac, will thaw due to solar radiation once in to around mid February though regardless of air temperature.

Snow from yesterday's shower remained pretty much intact right up until the sun came out this afternoon. Big patches still remain and what has partially melted in the sun will only freeze over again tonight. Black ice/frozen slush horror awaits.

Hard frosts at night can help to keep the snow longer despite sunshine though . A frozen crust at the top of the snow after a hard frost can help against the sun.
