One of my mother's favourite songs so I've got a definite soft spot for it. We'd often sing it around the house in impromptu performances. Class song :D

One of the few songs in the contest I had never heard before! I liked it, good pace for karaoke and a nice easy chorus for people to join in. Wasn't gone on his voice though and it was a little bit grating after the first couple of listens.

Another entry with similar music taste as my mother, this was another one of our favourites. Hitting those heights of IF YOU BEEELIIIEEEEVVVE THEY PUT A MAN ON THE MOON was always good fun. Not sure how well it would do in a pub setting though.

music MASSIVELY overshadows the lyrics here, the lyrics aren't great but the jazzy music is foot popping good! Not a decent choice for karaoke though as a result.

always a contender and a tough one to beat!! Everyone knows the words and a good bop. lots of good OOHS and AH AH AH YEAHS thrown in for good measure, with optional duet opportunities.

This one only works with karaoke if you have a few willing backup dancers / singers. Can't deny that it's a tune but it's a small bit slow for my liking until you get to the ultimate 90s'/early 00's boy band signifier - the key change!! But everybody knows the words and that's always a good start.

I did used to love this song right, and then Glee covered it, and since then I can't listen to it at all. If you can semi rap though, not and choice of song or karaoke but just isn’t one of my favourites.

excellent song but not too sure about karaoke wise! There's a lot of solos where you'd have to improv dancing a bit and that's always a problem for me, that's where the karaoke goes downhill. Good boppy chorus though, LOVE ISN’T ALWAYS ON TIME!

Belter of a song. Why didnt this win!

a great duet and an excellent bop although quite fast for a karaoke song I would think. Imagine trying to get through that after a few pints :D Totally didn't expect to love this as much as I did.

oh man. This is a real '2am post breakup in a practically empty bar in the middle of nowhere' kind of karaoke song. Ideally you should be crying through the chorus for maximum impact while people slowly back out of the room, and someone tries to cut you off and you start screaming at them to bring you another drink. Decent song though, just maybe not for karaoke...

look, you couldn't have known. But I have an unnatural dislike of this song. I don't really like Blur. This was last for the first couple of listens and then it made a very slight move up the table. I can't deny that I could get a good buzz out of roaring AAAAAAAALLLLL THE PEOPLE, SO MANY PEEEEOPPLLEEE but the song has just always annoyed me.

the whiff of depression of this is pungent. If someone got up and started this on karaoke, it would be a sign for me to leave the pub. Also not a hope that anyone could sing this with any sort of tune after a few drinks and now I will forever be haunted by this idea. Found this one a hard listen, but I liked it overall. Just not for karaoke - might have done better in a different category.

I was listening to this on youtube and assumed it was the lotto ad and turned it off!! Only realised on the second play on spotify that it was an entry… oops! Not a bad song but you'd definitely want a decent voice to not totally ruin this in karaoke! Such a beautiful song, it's a shame I never want to hear it again.

On repeated listens... jesus the lotto ad has totally ruined this for me. I am allergic to it i think.

top notch bop, works as both solo karaoke and a duet and I do love a section where the crowd can join in with a few ooohs and aaahs. 10/10 on the bop-o-meter!! lots of opportunities for back up dancing also!!

Thanks everyone for joining me for this live karaoke session, I hope to have round 3 up sometime next week depending on other events running.

    Welcome to Round 2: Karaoke!

    Our first contender this evening...

In 11th place with 11 points is - Spoiler:
    Homer J Fong

    Soft Cell – Tainted Love

Have I listened to this artist before? Yes
Have I listened to this song before? Yes

an absolute BOP of a song, couple of shouty bits, easy lyrics that everyone knows, rocking backing track… excellent.

I should say I've never actually done this song at karaoke before, and if I did I'd probably end up sounding more like the Marilyn Manson version than Soft Cell. :pac:

Here are a few songs that I have actually murdered done at karaoke before (links are to the actual songs, not my renditions!), from a period about 8 years ago when I lived in England while doing a postgrad; karaoke seemed more popular over there than it is here. Wonder if any of these would've scored higher?

    T-Rex - 20th Centruy Boy
Primal Scream - Rocks ("the campest version of that song I've ever heard" according to the MC :o )
Talking Heads - Burning Down the House

Haha, the comp in Dublin was in the pub across from Griffith College (I forget the name now). First prize was 500 quid, so a sizeable portion of coin to a broke ass college student at the time.

Three Rounds culminating in the Grand Final, you could use the same song if you wanted.

    First Round I went with

    Second Round then

And the final I went with Sex Machine. Lost out by 6 votes :(
