I really feel sorry for those in the hospitality sector, so much uncertainty.

There are weddings booked in for early summer where people thought they would be safe, but now are looking to re-book due to uncertainty.

Realistically, where do people think we will be at when it comes to numbers at weddings come June? Initially I would have said 100, now I think it could be 50 but it could still be as low as 25. There is such a massive difference for the hospitality sector in terms of a wedding with 100 in attendance as opposed to 25 in attendance.

It's really hard to tell at this stage. I was meant to be going to weddings in April and May but say could still be 25 until then.

If cases are down and hospitality open maybe they could push it out to 50/100 in June maybe. Must be a nightmare for venues and couples getting married to plan.

Well it's certainly shown that some of are idiots, like those who think scientists should have been able to predict everything in advance before they had any evidence, and the fact that they didn't equates them with conspiracy theory pushing lunatics.

On the other hand, we've managed to produce and begin distributing a vaccine in record time using new technology that will advance medical science in other ways in the future, we've managed to reconfigure our societies to keep infection and death rates far, far lower than they otherwise would have been, we've done that with some harm to our economy but nothing remotely close to the complete collapse that many predicted (remember when some people were stockpiling food because they were expecting society to collapse?), and the vast majority of us are able to continue leading fulfilling lives, albeit with certain necessary curtailments for the moment, despite a pandemic that was unprecedented in any of our lifetimes.
I think a lot of qualified people including myself were guided a little by what happened with SARS in China, that ultimately led to a quicker acceptance of the risks reported from there about the virus. The SARS epidemic acted in a very different way, considering the underappreciated risk of aerosolised transmission that was found among the highest levels of scientific expertise earlier in 2020.

In unsurprising news, restrictions to be extended until late February apparently.

The hospitality sector may not reopen properly until late May or early June.

And will most likely be further extended until at least Easter with maybe construction and schools reopening earlier than that.

Rte are great at reporting virus deaths but strangely enough do not even mention Vaccine deaths 55 deaths so far in america 29 in Norway...if "truth matters" as Rte says it does then why aren't they reporting it

Strange how the media always report negative news yet when it comes to the vaccine its all positive...do the vaccine deaths and people left crippled by it not matter

How many million have been vaxxed in USA?

    Are the vaccines 100% effective?

Edit. RTE did have a report on the Norway deaths days ago.

Have those deaths been directly attributed to the vaccine?

The trend is down, positivity and swabs always go up on a Wednesday.

    Don't be frettin'

Cases over the last 7 days are down by just over a third on the previous 7.

They are still coming down about as fast as could be reasonably expected. R0 at 0.5 or slightly less.

A lot of the regular tests that are done are routine in health care or residential settings.

On Wednesday we tend to get a backlog of symptomatic cases from GP referrals on Monday, Tuesday, probably from people reporting symptoms over the weekend.

Very depressing, feels more and more like 2021 is going to be another write off

Positivity rate was 16.35% last Wednesday, 24.19% the previous Wednesday. It’s 11.49% today. Not bad progress at all. If it falls by another 5% next Wednesday, we’ll be doing well. No guarantees of course.

The trend is down, positivity and swabs always go up on a Wednesday.

This day last week we had over 1100 more positive swabs and positivity rate was 16% comared with 11.5% today. I'd love to see faster progress, but progress it is.

    I'm beginning to hate Wednesdays!

Ah I wouldn't say that. At least as time goes on more people will be vaccinated and more vaccines will have been approved and distributed so there's light at the end of the tunnel. Hoping for a better 2nd half of the year anyways!

Yep, this year will be worse than last as far as I'm concerned. At least in 2020 we had a couple of months of normality before it all started.

Flattening the curve as a concept disappeared a long time ago as far as I can see, given the majority of people ending up in hospitals are old / have underlying conditions / or both, it's beyond me why we would need much restrictions come Spring but all the indications are we will.

Restriction fatigue has kicked in majorly, nothing like staring at the four walls in deepest darkest January to put you in good form :D

Come back 2020, all is forgiven.

Maybe after the August one or maybe next Christmas while we are at it. They will have to open up sooner. Can't keep the country shut down for 4 months.

    Hospitality is not the economy.

Given what happened in December I think/hope they'll be very cautious with reopening that sector. There is the seemingly unexplored compromise of outdoor dining/drinking which might make some businesses viable before the summer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 769 ✭✭✭PmMeUrDogs

It was a given they'd delay any kind of reopening as much as possible after the disastrous opening in December.

Feeling really bloody bleak though, the idea of not seeing the person I'm dating or my friends or family for another month or more, along with probably losing my job entirely if my sector (hospitality) stays takeout only til bloody June is upsetting tbh

They'll come under serious pressure before then but no way in hell Tony and NPHET will want anything open before a Bank Holiday

It does give society nothing to look forward to or aim towards after months of sacrifice

We don't want to be leveling off at these numbers.

And people are doing what they can in fairness.

I wish I had the answer.

    You're entirely correct I think.

However, 2,791 swabs will mean 2,500 cases give or take.
In the last 14 days the median/mean age of cases has been rising steadily, and the percentage of cases being hospitalised has nearly doubled as a result.

4.17% of cases were hospitalised in the last 14 days. If that holds, then we're looking at about 104 hospitalisations from today's cases alone.

So in short, things are rapidly improving case-wise, but the progress on the hospital front is much slower.

Society should have sacraficed a bit more over Christmas.

Society instead chose that sacrafices buy party's and stupidity. Society's decisions will be listened to and restrictions won't be eased for big events.

A cold decision should be made based on case numbers and hospitalisation numbers and rates.

Haven't seen 90% of my friends in college since a college event last March... Looks like we won't see eachother until after this semester too
