One of the ladies in our office lives with her parents and her elderly grandparents.
She's the only one who leaves the house for work.
She asked if she could work from home as she's very worried about bringing covid back to her parents / grandparents.
She was flat out denied, and told if she wanted to stay at home she could go on the PUP.
My jaw hit the floor when i heard it as the 3 fellas that made the decision are all family men, so you'd imagine they'd understand that family comes first.

Needless to say for her, and a few other there, their 1st priority is getting through the pandemic as safely as possible.
2nd priority is to change job as soon as jobs become available.

She could easily work from home btw, and did so for a couple of months, mid March to late May last year.

There really should be a process or legal route to hold employers who do this to account, the same as if they tried to force someone to work through maternity leave or whatever.

    https://www.thejournal.ie/how-many-countries-is-uk-strain-of-covid-19-in-5329965-Jan2021/

The media never cease to amaze me. More gutter journalism. The article references the fact that ‘Mass inoculation had brought hope that the end of the pandemic was in sight....’ written as if there is now less or no hope.

As far as I am aware, it is widely expected that mass inoculation will bring the pandemic under control and eventually to an end despite these new strains. All evidence suggests that current vaccines remain effective and in any case, if needed in the future, they can be tweaked to deal with a new strain which did make a current vaccine less effective.

Pure scaremongering as always. Rant over!

The Journal have really dropped in quality over the last while, if their reporters or editors get called out they go on a smear campaign of their critics.

Amazing how much higher ICU capacity is in some countries compared to here. Czechia and Israel only have double Ireland's population but have had well over 1000 in ICU for weeks straight now without healthcare systems suffering deaths from lack of ICU treatment as far as I know. Lebanon 700 in ICU population 6.8 million. Israel 1150 COVID patients in ICU with a population of 9.2 million. Seriously impressive capacity

I wonder is there an international standard for ICU bed? One thing we don’t do here is put things in place and claim they are something they are not. I’ve been in countries that claim to have a world beating motorway system and then you drive on them and they are brutal quality. When a motorway is built here it costs much more but is of a high standard.
ICU beds are so much more than a trip to Mattress Mick’s- it’s the infrastructure and staff.

That's an AFP article, and it's not particularly alarmist

    It's correct

    not written by the journal
    quotes the WHO
sticks to fact rather than opinion

so literally none of what you have said is occurring in that article

Journal are fine in the most part,

even if the ivory coast patriot types think they're all 'fake news' as they fact checked their BS and didnt stop when they engaged in active intimidation

Is anyone else starting to look back fondly on the old strain?

Sure it wasn't perfect, but compared to these new strains it was sound. I think we were all too harsh on it.

That's pure scaremongering. The South African and Brazilian variants showed notably reduced neutralization in monoclonal antibodies. In polyclonal antibodies the effect was only modest but significant. Antibodies are only one component of vaccine induced immunity against the virus. There is recent evidence to show that your Memory B cells continue to mature after infection and are equipped to deal with variants.

Long story short the vaccines may show mildly reduced efficacy. They will probably need to be updated in the medium to long term but for the moment at least they will work just fine.

Maybe there was method to the madness of everyone getting infected with the old strain before new year.

    Look at the guy's website.

All buzzwords, but says absolutely nothing. Meaningless nonsense about "building a better earth", but no indication about what, if anything, his company actually does.

He's a total spoofer. A paddy cosgrave type.

    The original article is here:

And another thread going into A LOT more detail.

I think the guy I originally quoted is being a bit sensationalist.

It is not an article

It is this guy providing the main points from a recent study. He links
    to it in the tweets.

He finishes his talking points by saying.
And all this said, I'll be getting the vaccine as soon as I'm able. We have an amazing vaccine now that works against currently circulating viruses. And if it becomes necessary, this emerging situation can be dealt with through a forthcoming vaccine update.

I know you won't name the company (nor would I expect you to), but places like this should be exposed for the way they treat employees.

This makes my blood boil. That is criminal negligence and also copperfastens my opinion that the softy softy approach by government towards businesses who don't allow people to work from home at the moment is not working. There should be a mandated closure of all offices at this point. They have had 10 month to get proper structures in place for remote working and it's on them if they haven't at this stage. You can be permitted a couple of staff members to come in to keep infrastructure going etc, but even this should require full time presence.

Is Orla O donnel a news reporter and is she reporting from court? Did Gemma O Doherty really come out with that line - 'people who died of covid had underlying conditions and were going to die anyways'. Its hard to see if a judge entertaining that nonsense. A judge would want to see some evidence if what's she's saying is true. She has little sense to be all stroppy in court.

Edit to add: I'm familiar with Orla now. She's a rte reporter.
