I would love to hear from more medical professionals on the front line. It looks to me as if initial symptoms for the virus is getting milder.

Is there still potential for mild initial symptoms to turn into SARS where people experience breathing difficulties later on in their infection perhaps at day 8 or 9 or 10? That was the turning point for infected people earlier in the pandemic. Boris Johnson went to hospital after day 7 or 8 of his infection (I can't remember).

Figures will be going up for next 2 weeks at least in hospital , and it is a lot more admissions than spread in hospital .
Both are serious and all are taken seriously :(

Hospital admissions have been dropping for 4 days straight now. It looks to have peaked on the 12th. If hospital numbers keep increasing, that will be down to slower discharges or increased hospital infections.

What's the R number currently? Are they hiding it intentionally so no one gets complacent

Just looks to be people self diagnosing.
These twitter doctors never give the absolute figures. It's always extremely vague. Someone could ring about a broken arm and test positive, and the doctor could list broken bones as a new symptom. I'll admit that is extreme, but if you want to massage stats, it's easy to do when you don't give absolute numbers.

They don't give daily R number updates, that's issued every Thursday for the past.... I dunno, year maybe?

    Jeez that is dramatic .

Considering we had 1000 cases in total on the 24/11/2020 and now 3837, it's not surprising.

anywaaay... I heard a story where two guys work together as surveyors. One got sick (pain in joints, basically flu). No coughing though. They spend a lot of time together in a car. So the sick guy gets tested while the other self isolates. Now the interesting part, even though he tested negative they sent the other guy to get tested as well. Strange, if the test was negative why testing the other person? Waste of time and money.

We have an option to get tested at work. I'm not getting tested, why should I? Pointless.

Surely this can`t be a serious post?

If you’re gonna try and have a conspiracy theory esque post, which is inciting nonsense surely you should expect that?

R number will be in the graphs on Thursday. As it always has been

I state the above with complete acknowledgement that its a nasty virus that clearly kills people but I would like some balance in the reporting of the 99% of positive cases that get better without issue.
By "get better without issue", you mean "don't die", right? Because the case fatality rate still seems to be a lowball 1%, I think.

Has this been mentioned yet, it came up on threads a while back that some dodgy dealings were going on with vaccines. They were accused of bullsh1t, seems very true!

Most of them were anecdotal, this one has been confirmed by the Master of the hospital. Very bad call and that'll be the story of vaccinations for the week.

Is there additional surge capacity for ICU beds in private hospitals it it came to it? Hopefully it won't of course. https://twitter.com/newschambers/status/1351090094971744256?s=19

Who was in charge of having a reserve list seems more important than giving it to family. This is much, much, much preferable to any of it going to waste in an effort to look proper. However we should have better alternatives on standby.

    Hospitals are organising themselves.

Thanks. Presume it includes ICU beds so. Think I saw could be 40/50 extra ICU beds in private hospitals but not sure is that in total or how many would be available for surge for public system.

Except for 2 groups, every age group has had someone admitted to ICU in past 2 weeks: https://twitter.com/hpscireland/status/1351096801286356999?s=19

Few articles in Irish times about covid positive patients saying they they think they got covid in supermarket as were no where else We go there up to 2 times a week (main shop online)if we need something as 3 small kids but making sure its very quiet and always follow guidelines re masks and sanitisation. Anyone else feel they got.covid from shops or feel its unsafe?

well what I heard anecdotally has been confirmed and now union officials are getting involved

hospital management of this particular private hospital helped themselves to the vaccine before most front line staff and it's now subsequently turns out that their supply lines are weakening and it could be weeks before the remainder of front line staff will get inoculated.

line managers are having to decide for their departments the order by which staff are to get the limited supplies..

    lovely

In the end they are private so they are probably free to operate whatever way they like... still reprehensible to me.

9 overs 70s, two others working in healthcare. The two children isn't a good look though. The doses would have been wasted if not used but giving them to the kids was stupid.

A lot of people talking about use of the excess vaccines in hospitals. From first hand experience GPs initially and pharmacists in the locality where offered vaccines by the majority of hospitals rather than not let them go to waste.

That is the right call, every vaccine should be used but only on vulnerable or frontline workers.

Which private hospital(s)? There was representative on from the Hermitage last week (Wednesday I think) to say the majority of private hospitals had received no private vaccines whatsoever particularly in Dublin

I didn't say they source their vaccine privately on an open market. I can't comment either way on their supply lines other than to say that the expected supply levels aren't what they were expected to be for the next few weeks.

There are no private vaccines, it'll all come through the HSE.

I know the excuse being used is that the vial has to be used up within a certain amount of time but can they not make sure the 5(?) people who are supposed to be vaccinated from that vial are in the room before the vial is prepared?

I would have expected that really. One single private hospital wouldn't have any clout on global markets for this vaccine. It would want to be part of one very large multi national conglomerate.

If they can provide a valid business/medical case for it there's really less of an issue as it uses up doses, no matter how agitated people get. TBH the sooner we get out of hospitals and HCW sector with their decision making the better.
