I'm always a bit skeptical of "too off the wall to believe" claims that come out after events like these, but it seems more and more like there was something far more sinister than a few thousand conspiracy loons marching in Washington.

Given the pictures and videos of white middle-class people crying about being called terrorists, it seems really unlikely that the crowds in general knew anything more than the fact . But such a crowd would be a perfect cover for more deliberate actions. A small group of well-trained collaborators could easily have used the protest as a cover to hit some specific targets and make it look like they were hurt in the chaos.

This wouldn't require wider conspiracy from other Capitol police, just one or even two inside people and five or six individuals taking part in the riot.

There's not any satisfactory alternative explanation for the lack of security at the time and the passiveness of security forces inside. It had to be deliberate.

That and the fact that the whole of DC and the area around the Capital in particular is absolutely riddled with Security cameras.

I see that 70+ arrests have been made so far and the expectation is for several hundred people to be eventually charged with various offences.

McConnells opinion is time limited. As soon as the new senators are seated he will no longer be senate majority leader. Chuck Shumer will be in charge then.

Well, I think even if there's enough Republicans switching over, they'll still want to hold a meaningful trial and hear evidence. They've only a day to do that before inauguration, which I don't think they'll regard as enough. So I don't think there's much chance he could be convicted before leaving office, even with Republican support.

As for what could happen on a longer timescale, that's a different matter.

Had seen that they also have their own cell repeaters inside the building. But the imei numbers aren't much use on their own without a court order for then finding out who that person is from the phone network, which would require some evidence of that imei number owner having done something as I doubt a mass "give us the names of the owner of every imei number" order would work.

Which is where the parler data helps, as they have already provided their geotagged pictures of what they were up to, and their social security numbers are linked to their parler ID's, and they were then identifying themselves in pictures posted by others as well I believe. The extreme stupidity means the courts are saved the hassle of having to argue over orders about finding the names of everyone present via their mobile phones, and the fools just told everyone who they were as they were doing it.

Sounds like McConnell might be more on board with the impeachment as the days go by. If he turns and votes to convict Trump you could see a large portion of the Republican caucus following suit.

As I said already objectionable as he is , McConnell is a very canny political operator. He makes very very few mistakes.

He will know exactly what the temperature is and which ever way he votes here will be the winning side.

So if he votes for Impeachment then a majority of GOP Senators will be voting that way too.

McConnell is the key bellweather.

McConnell is a very savvy operator. I think he was, previous to the armed insurrection, privately saying that there was no harm in letting Trump flail about in the Courts. Basically, let him on, nothing will come of it, he'll fail own his own and the GOP won't be held responsible for stopping him by his supporters.

That situation has very much changed now though.

But in reality, if people come after Trump on this matter, the legal debate will revolve around whether incitement to violence is a direct instruction or words which make people angry enough to be violent. And then if the second definition is taken, then the debate moves to why Trump's words are incitement above the words of certain other politicians.

On the face of it, it seems like a slam dunk, but I can imagine that it would be a protracted case thanks to legal weaselling. Maybe Trump's SC picks wouldn't save him on other cases, but they might do enough on that one.
