Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

Rough shooting jacket?

    Does anyone know of a jacket suitable for rough shooting that will actually keep you dry when the heavens open ? Many claim to do so but I have yet to find the ideal one. Simms make great fishing jackets that will withstand any amount of rain and you don't sweat up in them but I cannot actually find a comparable jacket for shooting.

    Recently got a deerhunter muflon jacket.
    It was a toss up between that and a seeland.

    Have been out about 10 times in it.
    4 of the times it was raining and 2 of them was bucketing I was kept completely dry.

    There is a light/lite version as well, but I haven't tried one.

    BTW I got mine in Sportman based in Finglas, Dublin was the cheapest around.

    Actually, just to add, I don't have a lot of experience with many other brand jackets/clothing.
    All of my gear (before this jacket) are no name gear, which served me well for the most part.
    I only recently started to get bothered by the rain lol.

    friends of mine in the UK use their gear for driven pheasant shoots and swear by their stuff

    With UK leaving the EU will you get caught for VAT, custom & excise duty - if purchasing anything over €22 from the UK?

    Buying items from the UK for more than €150 now seems to carry a very hefty tariff due to Brexit.

    Bought a Browning pro series jacket with removable inner lining. Must surely be 10 yrs ago. Think I paid €140. Very very cosy jacket. I shoot Fox's during the winter months I remove the inner lining for fishing in the summer. I think it is waterproof. I don't remember getting wet in it. I presume I would remember if I did. Any where the fabric is joined it is double stiched. But having said that if a deluge came I head for cover. Front zip went in it this year. You need special soap for washing it. Nicwax Tech Wash. It helps to waterproof it. You will see the beads of water rool off the sleeves.

    I would probably buy a similar jacket if I have to. But having said that once I get the zip repaired the jacket will be as good as new. I expect to get another 10 yrs out of it.

    The only jacket that I have found will keep you totally dry and stand up to the rigours of rough shooting like breaking through hedges is a heavyweight waxed cotton Barbour jacket!

    I have one for 20 years and had the previous one for almost as long only it "shrunk" and I gave it to my son who still has it. The current one will see me out as I don't have the energy or willpower to shoot in that sort of country anymore. If it does get torn you can have it patched, when it starts to let the water through you can have it rewaxed.

    Otherwise, pretty much any of the modern Gore Tex jackets will work if you wash and treat them correctly, just don't expect them to survive a thorn ditch :)

    I've gone through Barbour jackets and they were great one time. The modern ones are more of a fashion item than a practical country jacket .I tend to sweat a lot in them as they don's allow you body to breath due to the wax. They keep out a lot of rain but you get wet from the inside out due to sweat!
    I need to find something suitable in Gore Tex that won't fall apart at the sight of a briar!

    Then you should look at the Harkila Pro Hunter gear which has a lot of heavyweight cordura in its construction. McCarthys in Prosperous used to have it. Seriously expensive though but designed for crawling through heather and woodland.

    Somewhere around €500 for a Pro Hunter jacket I'd expect.

    However, I think the trend has been away from such heavyweight gear. Recent winters haven't been as cold as years ago and most lads (and some ladies) are going for more lightweight shooting gear and layering up when necessary.

    You can get really good waterproof and breathable gear like the Seeland Hawker stuff which is lightweight and very comfortable.

    However I wouldn't fancy its chances of making it intact through some of the double ditches where I used to shoot years ago!

    well i ordered a Game wax cotton padded jacket and a pair of their shooting trousers from Amazon, coming via address pal. It was cheaper from Amazon than from Game web site, total order £69, will see what final bill is when it arrives and let you know

    I could be wrong but no tariff/taxes/customs if purchasing from NI.

    Alternative may be to order from Amazon.de (Germany), EU to Eu so should be no taxes etc.

    Well I got hit for 21.53 euro for the game wax cotton jacket and shooting trousers, still think the 69 GBP plus the 21.53 euro makes the jacket and trousers not a bad overall price
