They didn’t say it was sorted. They essentially said that all of the swabs to 5th January were processed. That actually implied that there was still a backlog. I can’t understand the confusion. There’s about 5,000 remaining.

It was reported incorrectly by a couple of journalists. Richard Chambers tweeted that the backlog had been cleared, but he was misinterpreting what had been said.

While cases are high the continued addition of backlog cases is a pain surely they can separate the two ?

So I guess the backlog wasn't sorted then like they said yesterday
Philip Nolan said yesterday there was a 24 hour delay. 3096 backlog cases included in todays figure.

Not a good day tbh, Swab results not bad but the GP referrals I had hoped for more significant reduction. Cases and deaths extremely high. Hopefully people are complying to restrictions. Over 8,000 cases was a bit of a shock

If you want a look at the swabs.

It's not 5000 new cases + 3000 old cases they decided to release today.

It's whatever cases they processed through the checking and verification system. These could all be old for all I know and tomorrow we might get today's swabs turned into cases.

Rip to all those that died

Suppose us still having under 25 covid deaths a day (more than likely Covid wasn't the full contributor) is a small positive

I can't travel more than 5km and we let in a new strain from SA.

The whole thing is a joke.

How do people know any of these cases are from the backlog?

    Monaghan is out of control.

    What’s happening in Monaghan?

    We’re absolutely fcuked lads

These daily case figures are meaningless, they underrepresented the severity of the situation over Christmas and now make it look like things are getting worse when it seems it has taken a turn for the better (positivity rate from swabs dropped).

NPHET obviously have tons more data so are well informed of the situation, trends, etc. but when is being given to the public at large only causes confusion and reduces confidence that what we are being told to do is actually the right thing to do. We need to move to a different system of reporting.

Horrible numbers. Each of those deaths leave behind a grieving family, friends and colleagues. It's important we remember that. They aint just numbers.

We also need to look at age of deceased and recognise that death is inevitable. Covid or not. The issue is the health care system exceeding capacity, not the deaths in of themselves. We are not in lockdown because people might die; if that was the case the proper course of action would be for most vulnerable you isolate themselves and let everyone else live their lives.

Thank god we have Shane providing proper data so we know where we actually are, rather than these delayed case announcements

By not cancelling flights from South Africa, we were just inviting that strain here. It is mind boggling that as soon as they found out about this strain that flights were not cancelled from SA and all passengers arriving from SA were not quarantined.

No direct flights from Ireland to SA vice versa

    So are you isolating?

We don't have direct flights from South Africa

The backlog is the amount of positive swabs we have more than positive cases.

    https://covid19.shanehastings.eu/api/swabs/

If you look at the graph on this screen. In the roughest measure when the blue line is above the redline we are including cases from backlog.

If the redline is above the blue line we are increasing the backlog.

I understand. Which is why I said to quarantine SA passengers arriving here.

Of course, we have a vaccine and there is an end in sight but we need perspective. It's not a tragedy if somebody dies at 83. It's many things but not a tragedy. We need to make sure that their death is graceful and the scenes of Lombardy are not repeated but I am hesitant to call it a tragedy. People can say what they want. Im not saying that to be heartless, I recognise that life is valuable and the people who passed have people who love them but we can't pretend like death is something we can avoid as if it's not something that will happen to us all.

There’s not direct flights to Ireland from SA. All would have connected though London, Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt. There’s no easy way to police it

I wonder if Tony Holohan would dare criticise the government over their lax approach at screening arriving passengers. Nah, condemn the public at large as irresponsible winos. Finding one cause to latch on to (alcohol) and blame relentlessly, divert attention from government & HSE failings. Media by and large follow the script rigidly.
