I think she’s doing her best. There are a huge amount of people out there that want schools open right now. Equally there are many who want them closed indefinitely. Dammed if she does & dammed is she doesn’t.

It is a difficult job, to be fair, but any time I see her in the media - which is a rare occurance - I never feel that she's doing much more than sticking rigidly to what she has been told to say.

I really doubt that tbh....they seem to be extremely slow on rolling them out

It won't be far off it.

    "Let me say..."
    "Let me continue.."

She is utterly clueless, literally repeating the same nonsense over and over.

She also totally contradicted the Taoiseach who said at yesterday’s press conference no specific public health advice was sought on possible return of Leaving Cert pupils.

Full disclaimer I worked in the department of education before...and still have contacts in department...she is useless.

Regardless of my opinion on schools opening or the leaving certificate, I do think the teachers coming out and saying it's not safe for them to work appears very self centred.

Every statement I hear was about them and perhaps the kids in some cases but no acknowlegement or even awareness of all the people continuing to work because they have no option, nurses, doctors, medical receptionists, childcare workers, guards, fire bridge, etc.

Oh we will definitely have 1 million vaccinated by June, that's a very conservative estimate once Astra Zeneca and J&J vaccine come on stream.

1/5 of the population vaccinated by June doesn't sound great but it would be a decent start

I know, parents are really struggling. No home support, respite and now no schools. Very tough for them.

I worked with a Chinese lad once and he was a martyr for the drink. Funny thing was after half a pint he'd turn as red as a tomato.

it's an enzyme deficiency that many Asians have that causes this.

Has there ever been someone in her position that has not been considered useless? It’s a thankless position IMO

Ok, well seen as you’ve worked in the Department previously. What do you propose she should do?

So when this is over (hoepfully sooner rather than later) will we see some of the leaders in Government walk away ?

Ruairi Quinn was good in my opinion.
He had some terrific ideas some he got implemented some he didn't (due to lack of backing in department).

Not sure how he was perceived by the public though.

Do the conspiracy people genuinely believe this, or are they just winding people up? I mean how?

I have a degree in biomedical sciences. Just for the purpose of debate, could somebody go through, in biological terms, with reference to the relevant academic references, the proposed biological mechanism?
No. I’ll leave that fiction to the Black Mirror scriptwriters.

Shockingly, I did see a small poll claiming that 44% of Republicans in the US believed it.

Well, actually maybe I shouldn’t be that shocked.

Knowing what she was talking about would be a good start. Be consistent.
She shouldnt literally be directly contradicting the Taoiseachs statement that they hadn't sought specific public health advice on the return of Leaving Cert students. It should be the first question she is asking them, yet everyone else apart from her said it wasn't asked...

Once the elderly and other vulnerable categories are vaccinated, that should be the end of any restrictions. Over 65s account for 13% of the population. 55 to 64 is 10%. Once you get them and front line workers done we are at about 30%, roughing 1.5m. The UK has already vaccinated 1.5m, Israel are doing 150k a day.

We need to take whatever we are getting on the ****ty EU deal and cut our own deal too. We're spending 100m a week on PUP payments. If we paid the Israel price of €60 a piece, it would cost about 90m. Its pittance in the long term.

Teachers generally disagree, at least at second level. We are still dealing with the mess of a junior cycle that he left as his legacy.

There should be absolutely no excuses for cost with the vaccine. The mitigation measures are costing millions a day.

We are global leaders in the pharmaceutical industry but the vaccine rollout is incredibly ordinary

The excuse machine is in full flow though, the ball has been thrown, people are too concerned with blaming each other for socialising at Christmas .

I posted this on the schools thread but for those of you concerned about special schools and classes there is hope yet. (Read his follow up comment also)

As I said already I can only tell you my own experience. I don't think phasing out the junior cert to be replaced by continuous assessment was a bad idea at all in theory (if thats what you mean?)
He wasn't perfect and made mistakes but he made some excellent changes, like scrapping FAS.

Not attacking you at all. Sorry if you felt I was but you said you weren't sure what the public perception of him was, i was offering our perspective. The idea re the JC in theory may have been a good one. What we got is a disgrace.

That’s all fine but yet more criticism. You’re not actually offering any solutions to the situation the Department find themselves in. I can continue this debate on the schools thread if needed as don’t want to derail this one.

No it was dissolved and it's functions moved into SOLAS.

If that won't do as an example, I would go with the excellent national plan around bullying which he brought in.

    I didn't say you were.
I can only give my opinion based on working in the department and the feedback I got when in it.

Personally I would have shut down the schools for January but have given them some notice and involved union reps, public health, student disability groups.....a mad idea all together I know.

Tbh...I don't really care that much to continue the debate. I was just giving an opinion and where it was coming from.
