The variation in swab counts seems to be tracking with numbers of tests.

If there is a backlog due to testing capacity being hit, will we know?

I'm guessing our testing capacity must be close to 30k, but not sure we know what exactly it is. Tbh, our testing system seems relatively excellent, we're testing great numbers really considering our population.

I know cases of the flu are gone but is the common cold gone as well?

I think there is some adenovirus in circulation (at least I think its that one). No influenza or RSV.

There is definitely close contacts getting around that by saying they have symptoms

Definitely, but it would be a lot less than all the close contacts if we were ringing them up and asking them to come in

Dr Holohan said yesterday if you feel any flu like symptoms at all that it's almost certainly Covid 19 as there is no sign of any other virus' circulating.

If we are now only testing people who show symptoms, and the positivity rate is "only" 24% doesn't that completely contradict what Dr Holohan said ?

No, it means 76% of those getting tested don't really have flu-like symptoms, they've a cough, or a sore throat, or a headache or something and fear the worst and go get tested. They've head cold like symptoms.

I got a text from the HSE to say I was a close contact . I got no phone call so far

I knew I was a close contact and got the app alert . I nearly jumped out of my skin when the big red alert popped up !
Thanks for the heads up about that!

Are there even people testing for the common cold? That is absolutely circulating, had a bunged up head recently, felt like rhinovirus. No cough, sore throat or fever, just phlegm in the head and sinuses wrecked.

It's most certainly not I had a very bad dose of the common cold a few weeks ago and I was negative for covid.
I have 2 in laws both tested negative for covid but are in bed with flu like symptoms still. They've been sent for a 2nd test and are awaiting results but GP said it's most certainly flu if the retests are negative. The. Labs don't have the capacity to test for flu as they're over run with Covid, this is why we have 0 official flu diagnoses but GPS are diagnosing based on symptoms

Yes I think there's a fair bit of that going around as well

Just hard to tell what's a common cold or what's COVID

Think at this amount of positive cases and positivity rate, we have good while to go to reach the peak.

I got what felt like a head cold on Sunday but lost my sense of taste and smell. I got a positive test result last night. My partner had a head cold but no covid symptoms.

There are different levels of symptoms, and some of them are imaginary. We're also testing people without "flu-like symptoms".

I'd wonder is that as less staff on Saturdays and Sundays so we might be able to higher daily numbers Monday to Friday (like the 28k today) and then less then, so maybe in a worst case scenario we can call in more overtime (i'd imagine they're doing that anyway) and hit more than that.

I live in a house with 4 other people. A couple in the room directly under mine are coughing like crazy. Both of them. But they refuse to get tested.

In 1987 we had more sufficient capacity in this country to deal with Covid-19.

Over 2000 beds closed between 1984-1988

    Bagenalstown District Hospital, Co. Carlow,
    Brownswood Hospital, Enniscorthy,
    County and City Infirmary, Waterford,
    Kilrush District Hospital,
    Lismore District Hospital, County Waterford,
    Monkstown Hospital,
    North Infirmary,
    St. Laurence's Hospital,
St. John of God Hospital's Maternity Unit, Cahercalla,
    St. Vincent's District Hospital, Tipperary,
    Thurles District Hospital,

Majority of these hospital buildings are still standing today. In the case of Thurles District Hospital which I visited yesterday, the building can certainly be utilised to support non ICU capacity.

We have wasted 10 months unsuccessfully trying to delay the inevitable. We could have spent this time restoring these services. This virus is here to stay for the foreseeable future. Bed capacity needs to be urgently increased and a recruitment drive started immediately.

25K + 2K offshore - i.e. Germany. HSE did mention a new lab opening but no dates on it.

Plenty of common colds and other nasties around, many people with colds think they have the flu, others just panic.

Don't underestimate the potential for man-flu, likely still circulating and quite dangerous. If women got it there would be another NPHET type group set up years ago, but they just expect men to suffer it.

Do a Wuhan on them and nail the door shut! Feed them through the window!

How do you know it wasn't covid ? Some people have very mild or even no symptoms ?

6800 positive swabs with 25% positive

And you didn't think given there's you know a global pandemic that it might have been wise to consider getting a test? Or did you just continue business as usual?

    I disagree :)

The positivity rates tentatively suggests that growth is slowing down, which means a peak is imminent.

What am I saying? In the 7 days from 24th to 30th December, positivity rates grew by 18.5% per day, on average. From 31st today, they have grown by 6.19%, on average.

If we get to Friday and the positivity rate is still coming in at 26% or less, then we're nearly at the peak.

The forecasts have been slowly improving as the number come in this week. What was once a near vertical forecast, is starting to turn. Slowly.

I might eat my words tomorrow, but I'd say Monday is the key day that will confirm if the tide has turned.

We won’t be at the peak until 14 days after New Year’s Eve

Exactly, my symptoms are extremely mild, if I hadn't have had the loss of taste and smell I would have thought 'just a standard head cold'.
