Have 48 removed tethering? I can’t find the option on my iPhone at all anymore.

    Enter the APN...

    48months.liffeytelecom.com

...into the personal hotspot section of mobile data settings.

Tethering is working fine for me on my android. I don't think tethering is disabled by carriers anymore.

    Try this...

Or plug phone into a PC and log into iTunes and see if there's an option to apply APN settings.

so what do you do if you run out of data before your next top up date? Do you have to buy a data add-on or can you just top up 7.99 early so to speak?

You can carry over up to 5g of data from your account, it's in "Flexi Data".

Had similar issue, turned Data Roaming off and didn't notice any signal dropout since. YMMV

The support people insist data roaming should be on. Seems irrelevant if not counterintuitive😄

The dip in service in the evening is due to load - i.e the number of people using the service at the same time. This will apply no matter what newtwork you're with.
That's whats meant by "peak times" and user experience does vary by network especially those that don't have their own physical infrastructure and are subject to contractual bandwidth limitations by their provider. Bigger operators have bigger pipes so less dip as more people come on, especially in urban areas. Compare with a phone on Vodafone for a much more consistent experience.

There is no such thing as a best APN. Either the APN works or it doesn't.
Support make a big thing about all those fields and some crude empirical data indicated support settings gave me higher overall speeds during off peak testing with different sets of APNs. I just provided them for anyone who wants to try them without spending an hour onto support.

Incidentally the only problem I am having is that my signal completely disconnects at times, and I mean no signal at all but it's usually only momentarily. It has happened a handful of times in the 3 or weeks I'm been using it.
I've seen that happen a few times recently when speeds had degraded most, almost like a mast rebooted. However support insisted there were specifically no mast outages at the times I referenced or at any other times on those days.
Did you experience those breaks at random times?
It probably is as simple as you get what you pay for anyway and the main players won't help the cheap offerings to cannibalise premium packages. So it's still a great deal for calls/texts and data is way better than the old 3Gb/month on 3G but data speeds are wildly erratic and IMHO not dependably consistent in high pop areas.

I'd be interested to know how many customers 48 have now, considering Gomo have apparently
    250000. Wonder which network is,
    losing the most customers,
    to them.

according to comreg quarterly reports, GoMo got mainly eir and three customers and in reality made no dent in vodafone's customer base. Likewise here, it's only transferring around the budget customers between gomo and 48.

I wonder will post mobile begin to make a dent in Vodafones customer base. 48 and post mobile don't seem to have caused the same stir as gomo did.

Not in the slightest I'd say. PM might take a few from GoMo and 48 who want a more stable cheap product and pay accordingly. Anyone I know with VF wouldn't dare leave them, even if PM offers the same reception.
The Comreg report is interesting reading, it makes it obvious why VF didn't drop prices as there was no need.
although three and eir have less customers, they have all the "max data" customers which causes quite a load on the infrastructure. vodafone on the other hand have smaller allowances which prob means they can ensure each user has a more stable speed. But their allowances are only good for those who use mobile data for mobile purposes rather than home use

Just on drop outs Ive been having them too, it only lasts 30 seconds or so but can be frustrating if you are tethering. I wonder is it the network being overloaded or if Three customers experience the same thing?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,514 ✭✭✭beachhead

Have not experienced any drop outs/contention issue in the last month but Oct into early Nov yes.Customer Support is crap by the way.

I think for 7.99 a month there is next to no customer service. Like being with Eir you just hope you never need them. I remember being with Eirmobile for about 6 years and never needed to ring CS, when I finally did to switch to Tesco Mobile it was the most painful process ever, hours of time spent on hold to get through to nobody.

when i was on three billpay, i regularly had outages of data abd calls , yet i still kept paying as there was no alternative. now it doesnt seem as bad so far with 48, and its much cheaper.still get outages , but it doesnt bother me as much.

    Feedback from switching to 48.ie

Ordered SIM, arrived in post within a week.

Arrived in post on Saturday morning, all the switch done by Sat 4pm.

    activated SIM
    received security code, submitted it
    requested to port number
    thank you e-mail from Vodafone
number ported to Three / 48.ie
    ordered plan, 7.99 pm

    All okay so far.

BUT - no signal at my house, in an estate in a small town of 5k people - not a rural area

Also, on motorway driving - calls drop more often than VF

In a rural area (not my house), signal much worse than Eir or VF.

So I will be leaving them asap.

    I see a COMREG map of 2G / 3G / 4G coverage - is there a map of normal phone signal??

I just want to make and/or receive a call!!

Three (48) uses 900mhz 3G for phone I believe? I'm open to correction on that. You shouldn't really have issues maintaining a phone call. The example above would be a rare occurrence, but you should always check out a network before committing.

If Three or any of the networks using Three work in your area you'll be fine.

I am sitting at desk in house now, looking at phone screen.

Circle with a line through it, no phone signal.

    "no network connection"

Refreshing SIM data message on screen every few mins.

Have you ever tried another Three based network before? You may have a dud SIM card

Thanks, but I don't really understand the first part of your reply.

When I go into Select Mobile Network Manually, it scans, and this list appears:

    48
    48
    vodafone IE
    IRL - Meteor
