    Hey guys,

thinking of selling our second car, working at home i am finding it hard to justify , insurance etc. and think it would be best to sell it.

    car is a 162 BMW f06 640d

    very high spec.
    bmw warranty for 11 months.

What is best approach with a car worth around 35k?

    Any advice would be great.

I do think it looks much better in the pics now Jane and the wash and clean definitely makes it look more attractive. I think you’re more likely to have interest at this price point, or at least you might catch people who are filtering up to 6000.

    Best of luck with it!!

Wondering what people's opinions are of selling on donedeal at the moment? My ad has been viewed 400+ times, saved 20 times but only 1 ridiculous offer and no phonecalls.

What are the saves for, people interested but holding back to see if I reduce it further or other people selling the same car checking whats shifting?

Things are probably a bit slow, but it might be an indication that the ad or the price need improving. Can you post a link to the ad?

Honestly that is a tidy looking car, but it might just be out of reach for a lot of people in terms of mileage - 200,000km+ will struggle to sell unless its at the bottom end of the market.

That's not big mileage for a 9 year old diesel.

It doesn’t strike me as being overpriced, mileage isn’t mental for a 10 year old car either.

Hold out, it’s a niche car nearly at this stage and I’d say you’ll get your buyer eventually.

Not being flippant but we are in a big recession. On the other side of the coin you have the pcp crowd..but also putting pressure on 2nd hand prices. Pcp is depleting the market for 2nd hand at a certain price bracket. That bracket is ever increasing as lower and lower income earners are entering pcp.

I don’t think a €6k car is competing with PCP though.

Your average person looking for a family wagon on DoneDeal would think differently though, that is the point I am trying to make.

You'd be very surprised...you only need around 6k for deposit. And then you have the likes of nissans subscribe and drive with 0 deposit.
But yeah this type of car would not necessarily be impacted by pcp.

I got this email in response to my car ad and find it pretty suspicious:

Thanks for your response, where are you located?
I could actually send my private shipping agent to meet up with you for viewing the car.
I'd love to see more pictures of the car and is the car in good condition?

Any thoughts? I went back and asked them where they were located, but no reply yet.

    It’s a scam. 100%.

Next thing is they overpay you for the car, you send them back the overpayment, then the bank contact you to say the original lodgement has been voided.

Tired old scam. Think about it, why would somebody from abroad want to buy a used car in Ireland that isn't rare or a classic? It makes no sense other than them trying to scam you out of money.

Sure they go mad for the S-Max in Lagos.

My Dad actually sold a hiace for €1000 about 5 years ago to someone who was planning to ship it to Nigeria. Different car and price, I know.

A few of my own opinions which may/may not help :

    - It's probably not a great time to sell a car privately to start with, Christmas on our doorsteps and Covid complicating things. Dealers are giving good deals to get rid of stock, you are up against them.
    - Price a bit on the high side, close to dealer prices for a similar car from what I can see with a quick search.
    - No mention of an NCT will put people off a €20k private sale (or any sale for that matter). I simply would not entertain buying a car for that money with no NCT from anyone, let alone a private seller. I'd click to the next ad, wouldn't even call to ask about it. The NCT is the most basic of requirements when selling a car here.
    - Road tax: same as above, no details of current status, or how much per annum.
    - LS reg: yeah I know it shouldn't matter, and there's nothing you can do about it, but it's up there with a DL reg in terms of desirability. Lots of people don't see past the reg plate unfortunately. Anyway, nothing you can do about that - it just might limit the market a little, esp at that money.
    - Interior pics could be a bit better, one of the rear seats also would be good. One of the boot also. Drop a centre console pic maybe instead, or one of the side profile pics.
    - More details in the text, no mention of condition (don't assume it's obvious from the photos - tell people as well!). List some of the extras people like to see - BT audio etc.. R-Sport, what does it have for people who might not be up to speed on Jaguars.

Here's one with less miles from a dealer for the same price (no NCT details either actually, but just to show what dealers are asking for them):

No offence but if I was looking for a car on Done deal, I wouldnt give a second look to your car for the reasons stated above , and also

    1. Price to high for private sale when garages are doing similar for same money.
    2. It says zero previous owners, this cant be true, not a new car.
    3. On the face of it looks like you are flipping the car. it says imported from UK but no explanation how long you have had car.
    4. Finally it doesnt say anything about how much the car tax is.

On a more general note I see a lot of 2,3 and 4 year old cars online being sold by private individuals who are pitching their prices the same as main dealers and sometimes even higher. This doesnt make sense to me, if I was going to spend €20K on a second hand car, I would be looking for a very good discount in order to forfeit warranty etc.

0 previous owners means 1 owner.
That’s how donedeal does it, and that’s what appears on the vehicle registration cert.

Maybe it’s a funny angle - but the bonnet gaps look twice as big as they should be between the bumper/passenger wing?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,536 ✭✭✭✭L-M

The fact there is 20/30 of those sold every year probably doesn’t help their case second hand either.

    Hi,
Offer accepted on my car, selling to a big car dealer.
Car being collected by transport company.
Do I give dealer the log book with just my signature?

    Regards

    D

Personally I would get the person collecting the car on behalf of the dealer to sign it and post it yourself.

Dealers don't sign logbooks. They change ownership online, they have a dealer code that temporarily moves the car under their ownership until they sell it on but it doesn't show up as another owner on the car.

Any time I've traded cars in with dealers I've given them the log book unsigned. Best thing to do is just ask the dealer how to proceed.

    Advice needed.
Selling a car all agreed price etc. as he lives far away. I believe a genuine buyer.
Final step he asked for an inspection. No worries as I expect aa or something. But with covid I suppose it is hard to get an inspector.
One was booked for today but it got cancelled this morning as the inspector was tagged as a confirmed covid case. I could find very little online about the inspector but he did have a linked in profile where in he is a qualified engineer and inspects machines and vehicles.

So he can't inspect, they buyer is trying to find someone else to inspect and he is hoping someone can drop out wed to inspect.

My dilemma is that most common places are closed to business aa, rac etc. And I'm going to get a less reputable person that I possibly have not heard of before (I've asked for his details) to come and take the keys of my car for a few hours.

I'm very uncomfortable by this, and I'll ask for proof of insurance but really... Is that any consolation? I know if I want it sold now I need to put up or wait till covid blows over, but is there anything else you would do? I'd feel uncomfortable asking for a deposit, or should I?

Plenty of inspection crowds that come to your house and only take 30 minutes in your garden?
