Probably not the way you're leaning towards, looking at the hot hatches, but I would definitely be taking one of these for a spin.

Fairly rare here in estate form, but there's a 191 in Waterford that looks good. Price is POA but I've linked a couple of saloon versions for a rough idea.

I'd say 135i is the one that meets all those criteria most, and should be like a golf R with BMW interior.

I'm two weeks into my quickish little hatch and really enjoying it so far. I still creak the window down a little for the sillyiness of the exhaust when the mood takes, and enjoy revving it out in 2nd and 3rd without too much worries of breaking too many laws. Its been doing the mundane stuff like school runs and shopping trips and keeps a low profile when I want it to which I like.

The scratchy plastics and empty sound when closing doors doesn't bother as it is what it is, an inexpensive fun car.

The handbrake works great in it, and I recently enabled launch control from the performance pack using an odb cable.

    IMG-20201204-192412.jpg

When it is activated you get a little prompt every time you stop asking you if you want to launch which is silly and great at the same time.

Sounds like you've decided already on the M135i carsfan2, you just want someone to encourage it.

Buy the M135i. And I never realised you were from Limerick, hello neighbour.

While the above three cars are all very nice could they be any further away from a hot hatch?

Yeah buy the 135, just because me and other people on the internet don’t think it’s a looker shouldn’t influence your decision. In fairness it’s probably the best value hot hatch now and will be a lovely place to sit for a few years too.

What's the price difference between a 128Ti and a M135i? It's still hard for me to warm to the looks of the 1 Series.

ti in red not the worst?
I think there is about 4500 between them on price but not sure as pricing has been all over the place with the new vrt bands.
I am promised the definitive pricing this evening along with trade in offer

Very different from the BM option. Prob too compromised with more focus on driving rather than comfort. Not sure I could do the interior though as it'll be a decade behind the BM. That one has the shell seats though which look the business.

Carsfan2 give Aherns in Kerry a chance too. They are often more competitive than Conlons.

I’ve long given up on Conlans.
Bought three cars from them over the years but they haven’t been competitive price wise last few times I’ve looked and they don’t seem bothered.
Have gotten quotes from Ahern’s too in the past but they weren’t giving me great vibes.

I’m still at the tyre kicking phase to be honest. Will price a gti club sport too.
Colour of the 128ti is Melbourne red.

You'll always wonder what you're missing out on in the M135i if you buy the 128ti. It would want to be much cheaper.

I love red cars and have had a few but the red in that makes the grill even worse as it really stands out. A dark metallic would be a lot better I’d imagine.

I suppose for anyone buying a car like this, interior comfort is the last requirement. Would love a drive in one to see what it's like. Much more driver focused than the likes of the Golf R. Probably not as good an all rounder, I'd guess, that you could live with on a daily basis.

I got the up to date prices which has the m135i at 53,100 and the 128ti is 47443 but the addition of live cockpit professional which is standard on the m135i at 1540 means there is 4100 odd between the two cars. Probably not enough of a difference to make the cheaper car worth it.
Volkswagen golf gti clubsport is 52650 including delivery which is guts of a grand on the BMW's.

Yes I got an offer 30k against a new car order but I feel there’s a bit more available (not much) when I actually visit and if they think I will commit. Not a bad offer as I will need four tyres and a few bits soon enough.
They’re more keen for me to go 330e. Reckon bigger more substantial car with lots of pace and more comfortable and with grants etc comparable price wise and residual values strong they reckon.
Funnily enough when I got rid of my last 330e the opposite was the case....

    What do you think?

I think the colour choice on the 128ti and M135i are a bit underwhelming to be honest. I was on the configurator today and the base Alpine White seems one of the nicer colour to me along with the Magma red leather interior. The exterior red bits on the 128ti would have to go for me though and I'd go with the Shadow Line pack which tints the front and rear lights:

Or maybe Sapphire Black without the Shadow Line pack:

I think the 330e is a nice compromise. Plenty of power but great interior comforts too. I have a work colleague with a 2019 m sport and it is a nice place to sit with the light leather interior.

Edit: 30k for your own seems pretty decent I have to say, surprised by that.

Just make sure you get a good test drive in the 1 Series as it's 2 segments down from your current 5 Series so as a step up as it is from the last 1 Series, it still won't come near the comfort or refinement of the 5 Series. Just make sure that the hot hatch attributes are really what you want over that.

Yeah, that (~47.5k) looks similar to the number I was quoted for the 128ti. And that's ex delivery. Add another 1k on for that. I quickly had it up at over 55k then by just ticking a couple of boxes - the aforementioned "live cockpit", tech pack and adaptive cruise. So arguably, the m135 makes more sense.

I do think it (the 135 / 128ti) looks great in the pics above, the white would be my choice. Personally I'd have one all day long before a 330e. I am much more fond of the prospect of owning a hot hatch again, the supposed extra comforts/refinement argument of a larger saloon do nothing for me. I don't think I'd willingly choose to go down that path again.

It just depends which you value more, big barge refinement or a bit of fun. That said, the comfort, refinement, tech of any modern hot hatch is very very good imo.

I kind of think I have done the 330e but dealer says the current one is night and day ahead of the f30 one I had. Bigger battery and more power as well as the comfort of a 5 series allegedly. I am taking one on Saturday and will have a look at m sport one series they have to get an idea of size and quality. BMW Ireland have one m135i in stock apparently but doubtful I can get a drive in it.
The offer on my own is alright as I wouldn’t get any more in a private sale and it’s a lot of hassle for me. I will see what vw will give against a golf but can’t see it being any better.

Agreed on all this. Do you find the 4 series less refined or comfortable than the 5 was. Have you any regrets?

The128ti doesn’t stack up financially in Ireland compared to the m135i.
The golf 8 and m135i have very similar tech to 3/5 series alright. The club sport golf is better and more extrovert looking than the BMW exterior but I prefer BMW interior.

Pricey for an A4 on a private sale. I've an a6 sane year, lower mileage, black edition also and I don't think I'd get 16500 on private sale. But yeah, nice car. Just check the bhp on any audi you buy, there's a few different versions in the a4 from 120bhp to 190bhp even in same engine size. I almost bought a 150bhp a6 accidentally before getting my 190bhp.
