    Donegal WTF.

It's interesting how there's "lots" of cases in Donegal, some in Louth, but almost none in Monaghan, Leitrim or Cavan - so at least the whole border isn't an issue (Covid-wise ;) ).

Yes but it will be even more so this time around.

If you look at data from October 2019 and October 2020, this hasn't been the case.

It's not inevitable whatsoever. How long did it take us to go from 200 to 1k cases per day last time?

Staying in lockdown indefinitely to avoid entering another lockdown is one of the stupidest things ive ever heard

Did the last time include the December/Christmas /New Year period with all that is associated with it? You and others can delude yourselves all you like but another level 5 period of restrictions in Jan/Feb will be happening. It`s just a question of how long it lasts for.

With the promise of another lockdown in January people will now just say fcuk it and go mad at Christmas

How many lockdowns until Christmas daddy?

If it means we can have a few pints and live a bit and see family and friends for a few weeks in December then I and I presume many others would be fine with level 4 or 5. Its why the Europeans have bought into their lockdowns more than us because they were allowed live a bit for a few months instead of being told to be constantly worried.

Maybe the two week circuit breaker concept will be feasible.
Will they shut schools and re-arrange holidays and include construction etc?
Will it be only for the two weeks?

I doubt it to be honest but if we only start seeing an increase in cases in January a well timed CB with the vaccine carrot could see us out at L2 perhaps.

You gave made up facts and you gave no links.

The likes of you are the worst of posters.

Cases peaked on the 18th. All the alternative facts in the world can’t change that. By the first day of midterm they were 20% below peak. By 5 days after midterm, the earliest possible date that midterm could have had any impact on the data we were already down 40%.

Trolley numbers down 70% on last year. Well at least we know the HSEs solution to their complete incompetence - frighten the life out of people so they beg for lockdowns.

Tell people they are going to be in lockdown for another six weeks and they will just say fcuk it and go mad now. Whether we have Level 1 or Level 5, it relies on public adherence, if compliance drops the level is meaningless. Another lockdown in the new year is inevitable, giving people a break now and getting some kind of Christmas will keep people onside.

Vitamin D is now being recommended for older people... Not for COVID, but for bone health.

In fairness, this is quite misleading....many older people are on a combination of calcium and Vit D therapy to prevent fractures associated with falls....has been a cornerstone of geriatric medicine for quite a while

I would buy in for a 2 / 3 lockdown in January however that things including pubs would open for good in February and beyond.

The Pharmaceutical companies are going to make OBSCENE amounts of money selling these vaccines.

Btw 41 is absolutely pathetic from Donegal. Cavan and Monaghan are less than 5 cases.

Obscene money is a stretch. AstraZeneca are selling theirs to developing countries at cost price.

Either way, the cost of a vaccine is far, far less than the cost of the measures in use to control the spread of the virus.

    That is true.
Cases did peak on the 18th with 1283 cases that day.
However taking one day for a stat is not reliable.
This is why trends are quoted - like 14 day average, 7 day average or cases per 100K.

The simple reason for this is that not all cases occur may occur within the same day. 18th October was also a Sunday meaning that a backlog from the weekend occurred. The following day there were 1031 cases. Now no one would seriously try and claim there was a 20% improvement in our situation the following day.

Indeed thereafter the cases did fall.
This was because level 5 was in operation and all shops/retail (apart from food stores) were closed. There was less activity in the economy.

Still even with schools closed at level five for over a month has still led to 400+ cases per day over the past 14 days.

The research on schools across the world has been done.
    It is clear cut.

    Schools contribute to viral spread.
Of that there is no dispute (except among people who think that viruses do not go to school)

The issue is whether the viral spread is bad enough to close schools.
In Ireland schools have been kept open.
Other countries have closed their schools and/or gone online.

Very different borders. Look at the pure geography.

Percentage of Donegal county land border shared with Northern Ireland is 93%.

Derry - fourth largest city in Ireland- any major metropolitan area always draws population in to it.

    Derry 2km from Irish border.

Just asking out of curiousity, as someone mentioned it earlier to me in conversation

How do Garda checks work if you're hopping on a bus or say, if you're on the DART?
They can't kick you off the bus or the train

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,077 ✭✭✭KrustyUCC

It seems to be a fait accompli that we will be back at level 5 in either January or February

Even before this level 5 kicked in NPHET were already making noises about the need for level 5 in January or February

Now you have the great Leo saying it in the Dail even before this level 5 is over and will be lifted very slowly if the reports are accurate

Just another 2 - 3 weeks of staying within your county not seeing friends, family, partners

Sure no biggie from the government

Haven’t seen any on the Maynooth line which crosses Dublin and Kildare.

    Haven’t heard of any either.

    No point either.

No but they now do have the power to issue an on the spot fine for non wearing of masks or violating the travel limit without a valid reason. Enforceing it is another issue though. Hopefully it will be but I wouldn`t be too confident.

    That's what we were wondering

If you're in Dublin and go to Bray, is there a Garda on every carriage or something?

If you're on the bus from Drogheda to Dublin, how could they kick you off in the middle of the motorway?

Tell them you're a teacher or nurse.

    That's the end of that.
