Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

The Lies about santas movements on christmas eve broadcasts were a problem last year.....

On christmas fm one minute "santa hasnt left yet"

On another station at the same time "santa is in china"

On rte news a few minutes later " santa has got permission and is on his way to ireland"...

My young lads (6 and 7) are too clever for this level of spoofery...

When my lies dont stack up with those other lies...it causes headaches!

Just control the source, as in if they heard X from Christmas fm don't stick on RTE. Tis all we can do.

My dad is an awful man for putting his foot in it, he showing signs of age. Santa brought our eldest a pair of runners one year and got the size wrong, my dad said not to worry he will bring them back as he still has the receipt, we corrected him that Santa brought the runners, he was adamant that we were going mad as he remembers buying the runners for us to give to the elf. We had to explain to the elf that the Santa story was real and my dad was losing it.

This works a treat on xmas eve with its moving Santa on the map, They wont hear anything else.

That reminds me of a Christmas a good number of years ago

My sisters kids got their presents and were delighted with life

So at the Christmas dinner the aunt pipes up “so Eibhinn I see you got the playhouse after for little Anna. Remember we met outside the toy shop that day”

All the while the kids listening in.

My sister and mam saved the situation by saying they were only in the toy shop to check if the elves had picked the right one

And no doubt probably plenty of kicking her under the table to get her to wise up!! She blamed the generous pre dinner serving of baileys after

Usually I wake up to a huge breakfast on Christmas Eve cooked by himself. He lays the table out and goes out for baked goods so I wake up to a lovely smell of coffee and pastries. :)

We usually end up going for a long walk with the dog, do a few loops of the Phoenix Park. Come home, watch a movie with the kids then get them washed and dressed for bed while himself gets takeaway. Once the youngest child is in bed the rest of us will watch a movie and have a glass or two of wine.

Mine are past the age of Santa now and in a way that brings its own peace.

Way to go! We did ours last week. Measuring out the new fridge now to accommodate the ham and turkey. Yesterday I put up those ultra hold hooks for the lights in the conservatory. It's getting serious now! :D

Just giving this great thread a bump.

My Christmas eve tradition is going into town, just to wander around the shops, and soak in the Christmas atmosphere. I head in with my 2 brothers and my parents. We then head into a pub for a drink on the way home and pick up a takeaway.

I'm 23 and live at home as do my brothers (am the oldest of 3 boys), so my Christmas hasn't changed drastically all my life. I love it. Other Christmas season, but not Christmas eve traditions I've started over the last few years is 1) Going to the same restaurant each year with my family on the 23rd, and one Friday in December, me and my friends go out on a pub crawl. They're great fun!

So, as with most people, my traditions (quoted) are going to change this year. My family unfortunately will not be going to town.

This is down to 2 reason, 1) of course Covid, and 2) one of my dogs died this year, leaving us with 1. She suffers from extreme social/separation anxiety and is never left on her own. We had planned to bring her on a walk in Stephens Green, but she had ACL surgery 5 weeks ago and unfortunately is crate bound until after Christmas.

We may get out as a family of 4 to a pub / meal, but one person will have to stay at home and mind the dog. (Both of my brothers don't really like going for out, so I can take my parents out over the Christmas at least.)

It's soon to be up there with the Toy Show and ChristmasFM for Christmas legacy.

Whenever I get a chance I read over this thread from start to finish, it really is the best of the season feels.

had an awful xmas eve last year, my father got a stroke on the 21st december. spent 3 weeks in hospital. thank god had no ill effects and back in great health now. spent xmas eve last year in the hospital til 11:30 pm, christ its a lonely place. i will always remember walking out at 11:30 watching a young mother run in with her 5 year old in her arms obviously sick with something, horrible to see on christmas eve

Just reading back through these, and when i came to this the tears have started for some reason. I think it might be the thought of a christmas without my father and how close that was to happeing or maybe the mother coming in with her child on christmas eve and thier didnt seem to be anyone else with her. I will never forget the lonliness of that night driving home. Just think of how lucky you are this christmas eve and of all those who cant even think of the day it is let alone any plans.

I remember when I was 10 in casualty with my father to get my knee stitched up, a man rushed in with an infant. I’ll never forget the “oh fùck, my world is in the balance” look in his eyes.

Christmas will be different this year. I am 22 and have always spent Christmas at my grandparents. We will be going to another county this year to my aunties new house and enjoying it as a family. It will definitely be different, but fun.

We plan to go for a chinese on Christmas eve and have a couple of drinks, something ive never done before, usually we just go to grannys and chat and eat chocolate.

The other half and I are expecting our first kiddo in summer. she's from Austria, where there are completely different christmas traditions and characters. We are going to have fun mixing them. Presents on both 24th and 25th maybe, but the question of Christkind vs Santa is on going. They may be mutually exclusive.

Stolen from FPC's countdown facts of the day but it's relevant for this thread.

"In Spanish, Christmas Eve is called "Nochebuena,'' literally translated as "Good Night."

Good Night hardly describes it, the best night is also fitting. And any excuse to bump this thread :)

Most emotional thread here for me. Some of the posts really pull on the heart strings.

I remember last Christmas Eve I was walking to the chemist and I seen a family visiting their elderly relatives but because of covid they were seeing them through the window. Little kids banging on the window and waving. It was absolutely heartbreaking. I hope nothing like that happens this year and everyone has an extra special Christmas since we were robbed of one.

I am beginning a new tradition this year on Christmas eve. We will sit down with the youngest elf and make a Christmas themed jigsaw or lego set. This year we have

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,471 ✭✭✭CheerLouth

I've bought that set as part of Mr. CLs Christmas present...I'm super excited about seeing him make it with the mini elves 😍

Lego, like board games, is great for transcending the generations.

    Woohoo!!

Was talking tonight about Christmas Eve traditions past, we stopped a few years ago. Maybe time to make some new ones!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,000 ✭✭✭antimatterx

Same my traditions kind of died because of COVID last year. We used to go to town every Christmas Eve. But that stopped, and it's not happening this year. Will probably go on a walk with the dog somewhere she doesn't usually go. It's sad that things end, but things move on, I think.

But yeah, looking forward to Christmas anyway. Should be good, but Christmas Eve is far, far superior. Looking for chill day. I'll help my prepare the food, probably will get a Chinese in the evening and soak everything in.

My Christmas Eve traditions are back on this year. Dinner with parents and then pub to meet friends for a couple of pints. Home then to watch Carols from Kings. Have a good one everyone. Happy Christmas Eve 😁

Normally I get change to have a re-read of this thread coming closer to the season but I honestly can't remember the last time I re-read it.

I had a bit of spare time last night so I started to read through, I only got through the first 30 posts of so but oh my god, the instant warm feeling this thread gives is unreal.

Even when I came across my own post it took me right back to that time in my life. Hard to believe it's been 11 years since the thread was setup! I love it was setup on a Rudolph Day and all. It's a great good feel read, looking forward to catching up on it.

That's why places like boards are so go, the posts are timeless in this thread, it's a great time capsule.

  • Registered Users Posts: 155 ✭✭emmagination

I've just read through this thread, it was so lovely reading through all the various traditions throughout the years.

I'll be almost 8 months pregnant for Christmas this year so it's likely to be a chilled out and relaxed one, but I'm already looking forward to Christmas 2023 when our much longed for baba will be with us!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,827 ✭✭✭Jude13

It's the best thread on Boards!! Have you any Christmas eve traditions?

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,865 ✭✭✭TRS30

Definitely, hits me in the feelers more than any other thread on here.

  • Registered Users Posts: 155 ✭✭emmagination

I think the last time I posted on this thread was 2014, so a few things have changed but I'll still head over to my Dad's on Christmas Eve! My husband will visit his folks the week leading up to Christmas and will meet me in Dad's house.

Christmas Eve is my birthday and it's the big 40 this year so I'm thinking of having a little spread of m&s nibbles and inviting a small amount of people up, just for a little while!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,827 ✭✭✭Jude13

M&S nibbles are a big thing I miss from home. They used to do a great gluten free platter.

Sounds lovely and with the pending arrival, you'll start to make new traditions.

This year mine will change dramatically. My wife is from a different county so normally we will exchange gifts Christmas Eve morning then get ready & do stuff around the house listening to Christmas music until we go for dinner with my parents and sister and her child. She will then drop me to the pub and I will meet friends for drinks while she goes to her mother's for Christmas and I don't see her until Christmas day after the dinners and stuff. After I've been in the pub I'll go home and watch carols from kings and a movie. I do love it but it's always a bit sad when all my mates and people I know go home to spend Christmas Eve night with their loved ones. I could go to my parents but they don't drink and watch different things than me so I don't want to show up smelling of beer and changing their routine! But this year we will have our first born fingers crossed which means my wife will be staying here until Christmas day. I'll still meet my friends for a few while her mother comes down here for a few hours but it will be fantastic going back to the house to a family and to watch carols from kings etc. Also actually exchanging gifts on Christmas day and going up to my parents Christmas morning with the child and getting pics. Sorry for the long message but there's even more I could have put in ha.

I'll need a very quiet day or a day off to read this thread again from the start, but have promised myself I'll make time at some stage in the build up this year.

Shopping, cleaning, prepping food, wrapping presents, dinner, a movie and a really expensive bottle of red wine to reward for the day and in anticipation of the most relaxing day of the year.
