Micheal Lehane reporting that takeaway drinks are being banned
Complete over reaction, just being seen to do something

All they needed was the Gardai to actually enforce byelaws and existing public order legislation.

They really do not seem capable of targeted measures. Everything is a blunt stick. Devoid of logical thought and totally prone to reactive measures without appropriate consideration of the options.

You mean “people like” me? I’m high risk, got my free flu jab last week. But cheers for the assumption.

    where did i mention you?

I’m not a member of the anti-restriction clique that you previously suggested? I’ll take that as a compliment, that’s very nice of you.

Dunno article just says "current travel restrictions"

It is unclear and ambiguous but does go into tests in same bit so assumed it was for international travel.

    Latest testing and tracing data.
Test requests over the weekend smaller than last weekend. Average of contacts remains around 3, no change seen here.

People seem to forget that people in Ireland, especially us Dubs have been in a virtual lockdown for months.

People in Europe have had a lockdown for a few weeks

We need a break at this stage, any talk of extending the lockdown into January is madness and utterly depressing

Glynn is back which means the other fella who bricks himself up there every week must be gone

Ah he was ok, just the leg going ;)
Not everyone is cut out to be on national TV.
Glad to see Glynn back though , was concerned he was being sidelined.

Gardaí upheld the law by breaking-up the street parties. What do you expect them to do - arrest everyone who was drinking on South William Street?!

Say he's still one of the acting deputy CMOs. I think public speaking is not necessarily a skill everyone has and bit different when there's also a fair few people watching.

Can't get over how incredibly OTT banning takeaway drinks is. Just reactionary nonsense.

Nothing decided yet. Could just be kiteflying to see reaction of publicans and public. This is a lot vaguer:

Thats not whats being said here, where has anyone called for arrests ? What street parties, didn't look like any street party I've ever seen.

People complaining about drinking in the street, firstly in Dublin city centre its illegal move every on, not 2 or 3 hours after it starts, damage already done by then.

The Gardai weren't bothered until the social media commentary started, same as Dame Lane months ago, they knew about it anddid nothing and now everyone else gets punished

    Nothing hugely surprising, I guess.

If you ban takeaway pints, they'll just sell takeaway cans.....

Reminds me of being in school when the teacher would punish the whole class because it's easier than finding out who did something.

Incredibly frustrating for those of us sticking to the guidelines.

But standing on the street isn't breaking the guidelines and anyway outdoor transmission is negligible.

It is the relation between the Twitter mob of idiots and rule by emergency decree that I find disturbing.

A random person just has to produce a video of a bunch of people standing around and then a few days later some industry or activity is outlawed.

I think moving them on only moves them around the corner so not sure what Gardai could do really. I don't think takeway pints was meant for drinking outside pubs, otherwise they might as well be open with drinking outside.

    Overreaction from the government

I'm surprised they moved this quickly

The gatherings of groups socialising have been going on for the last two weeks at least , in Dublin anyhow.
Its about time really for some sort of reaction .
Need to reinforce the message with some employers as well .

What happened to fines, were they not introduced and passed, legislated?

We will be under longer lockdown if more don't abide the restriction rules, surely a few weeks without a pint outside isn't too much

And you link a video from 4 months ago taken on an unknown date ??

Relevance to the weekend just gone, zero. Changes nothing in terms of byelaws and enforcement of said byelaws

no one's drinking takeaway pints at home. it encourages street parties, which is exactly what happened at the weekend in cork and dublin. a ban is appropriate.

Is drinking on the street other than being within the environs of a bar or restaurant not illegal?
I was under the impression that it was but I could be wrong. Also, how many people buy take away drinks to actually take home? I can't see the attraction of a flat pint or a cocktail that has warmed up on the way home myself.

There were no fines introduced for standing on the street and anyway the DPP would be worried about the constitutional legality of trying to enforce fines for standing on the street.

Not allowed to drink it within 100m of the pub you got it from and secondly in both Cork and Dublin city centres drinking on the street is indeed illegal

So you are only able to meet people from one other household. The only people claiming that there was nothing wrong with hundreds of people meeting up with hundreds of people all from different households is the vintner's association.

There was nowhere in the guidelines that said you can go into town and stand around getting pissed. To argue otherwise is an offence to all those following the restrictions.
You can meet with 1 other household in an outdoor setting which is not a home or garden, such as a park, including for exercise. Only essential workers can travel to work and only essential retail and essential services can remain open. Construction and manufacturing can continue to operate.

Please stop posting the first thing that enters your head as if it's a fact.

Of course people are drinking takeaway pints at home. The overwhelming majority of people are doing what they're told to do.

I have a few times, Saturday evening order dinner from the local, up and collect it, few pints with it and home.

Easy way to ensure the local is still there when they're allowed to reopen by spending a few quid every now and then
