In Dublin anyway, it's alright though, the gardai have said 'nothing to see here'.

Holohan said in the press release that there is a significant number of outbreaks associated with workplaces and funerals.

Hardly call people standing around outdoors a street party now.

Personally I don't have a major issue with people standing out in the open and not on top of each other

A reminder that last Sunday we had 542 cases. It would be nice to see cases moving downwards again but today's number is not awful.

So that's funerals added to the blame list now too but schools have to stay open no doubt about that

It's the schools, schools and schools.

NPHET are lying out their arses on schools as other countries (Greece, Germany, Czech Republic, US) are closing schools.
You cannot have 1 million in buildings with no social distancing and no masks at lunch breaks and expect no response.

We are going to spend longer in lockdown and/or at level 5.

    Hospitals are workplaces.
An average of 50 healthcare workers per day have tested positive over the past 2 weeks.
They'll also have infected several patients (as the hospital numbers show).

Maybe Holohan and NPHET should look after the workplaces that he has control over.

Were they council workers street cleaning just taking breaks for a few drinks  I doubt they were keeping social distancing, why do so many have to meet up at once, what's wrong with just 3 or 4?

Fully expect us to be back to 1200 cases a day in another week or two with the schools been open.

Ironically this weeks numbers are mostly coming from infections which would have been seeded during mid term break.

Richard Chambers with a thread on Tony Holahans comments this evening.

Did he show any concern for the outbreaks in hospitals and care homes or is it just the general public who are at fault for numbers rising (and that really depends what metric you use to measure them)

Data gathered worldwide are increasingly suggesting that schools are not hot spots for coronavirus infections, according to an article in the leading science journal Nature.

In conclusions that tally with evidence presented by the Health Service Executive in relation to schools in Ireland, the Nature article finds that despite fears, Covid-19 infections have not surged as a result of the reopening of schools and childcare centres.

It says the international evidence also shows that when outbreaks do occur, they mostly result in only a small number of people becoming ill.

I thought they are aware Schools being open add to the R rate, but it is an accepted trade off to keep the economy and society functioning as much as possible.

I think i read somewhere schools account for around 0.2/0.3 of the R rate.

So we can't really get lower than that, it'll slow down the decline but we should still decline with it at a R rate of around 0.5/0.6 nationally, opening up all retail probably adds 0.2 and hospitality could add 0.4

It's all about keeping R below 1.0 when we get to low base.

We have to choose what parts of society are most important to us.

The Irish coronavirus group (they added on the UK too because of the North), there's people in that group saying they are testing positive for the virus again, months after the original infection.

I don't know of these are reported officially as reinfections, but it looks as if reinfections is possible and is happening.

We probably won't see a true representation or picture of reinfections due to all the measures to slow the spread of the virus but looks likes it's fairly real.

It’s very hard to find facts and figures on reinfections. Seeing that all positive tests are officially recorded it should not be too hard for the health authorities in various countries to come up with the data on this. We keep hearing about reinfections but only in a anecdotal way.
Where ar the actual verified statistics. I think the reason we are not seeing any official data suggests that if it is happening at all it must be very rare.

I doubt we will reach that high but it will level off at probably 300-400 cases per day with schools open.
Truly awful if the situation retirned to 1000 cases per day at level 5 (which I do not see happening)

What is whether schools open got to do with the economy? Many parents are working from home anyway.

Schools are not closed in Germany or many parts of the US. And you say NPHET are lying? Infection rates in the Czech Republic and Greece are a multiple of ours and more drastic action was needed.

In Ireland, infection rates fell for many consecutive days with schools being open.

Not whatsoever, with the schools been open and proper testing even day probably be closer to 5000 a day.

What would be wise is to close schools early for Christmas, this will add 0.2 or 0.3 to the available R rate...

It could be a case of close the schools, open the pubs for December

open the schools in Jan and close the pubs!

Decent progress seen again this week.

Cases 2,613 (887 less than last week)
Reported deaths 34 ( one more than last week)

In Hospital 249 (32 less than last week)
    In ICU 31 ( 9 less)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,100 ✭✭✭BringBackMick

On current trajectory I think we are down to around 150 cases daily by 1 December, not a bad feat in fairness.

Then we choose wisely our opening strategy

We need a lockdown like March/April but instead we are trying a cake-and-eat-it Lockdown with schools open. In fairness this is the situation across Europe but the tide appears to be changing this week with schools closing in increasing numbers of countries.

Ireland - NPHET and the politicians - will keep schools opened.

Therefore level 5 for longer than it should be with the virus never really under control.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,123 ✭✭✭prunudo

Thats how you report positively, nphet seem to think the constant downplaying of positive news is how they keep us on side.
