I'd say the media around the world will be trying to big up these ones, "Look at all these poor people who've been told by their government not to come home for Xmas :'( ", but I don't think people will lap it up.

RTE put up one yesterday evening with 3 people talking about their "heartbreak" after Leo told them not to book flights, and all of the comments on Twitter were, "It's a pandemic yis fvkcing gobsh1tes, stay where you are and come home next year".

There is hypocrisy at play with regard to travel for Christmas. The pandemic couldn't be tackled by isolating the vulnerable as "We are all in this together". But there's no problem telling Irish people not to travel home.

We're told that people in Australia are enjoying the good life, while their fellow citizens stuck abroad cannot go home. "All in this together".

I see selfishness and 'Devil take the hindmost' everywhere I look, but everyone claiming it's the other person doing it.

There are conflicting articles on Level 3 online .Does Level 3 allow one family visit a another home or not .I can read four articles and two say Yes and the other say NO

Looking on at the sh1tshow going on at the top level in the north I think we are probably wasting our time hoping for an all island strategy. If there was mature leadership up there we'd have had it months ago but instead what we have up there is akin to a schoolyard feud with neither side willing to find common ground. We have to look after our own backyard and protect our own people even if that means stricter border controls. We're far too precious about a border which is not serving us well at the moment. There is something wrong when a Garda can stop someone from going between say Cork and Waterford but not Derry and Donegal or vice versa.

There are various measures they could bring in within level 3. There is provision for both that you mention, all depends what they go with.

Likewise indoor dining allowed is a provision in level 3 while they could also go up to only outdoor dining

The fella from Saudi Arabia really pissed me off. Happy out to leave Ireland to coin it in as a software developer in a human rights abusing country, and then he has the cheek to moan about being discouraged from travelling home for Christmas. You've made your bed pal......

    Level 3:

"No visitors to home or garden, with the exception of visits for essential purposes (for example: family reasons such as providing care to children, elderly or vulnerable people, and in particular those who live alone)."

"In outdoor settings away from your home or garden, up to 6 people from a maximum of 2 households can meet while maintaining strict physical distancing – including for outdoor exercise and dining."

Test and trace appears to be a disaster in NI. I am sure the population up there know all about the precautions that will lessen the spread, but are they adhering?

Even having checks on the Irish side on approaches to and from Strabane and Derry could be tried, but a lot of those crossing over for shopping and leisure are probably within the 5k rule.

That would not be a border check but a check by ROI on ROI residents and those who are not cross border workers, but I can imagine the hullabaloo. Even if Holohan asked people to avoid travelling across the border other than for work, for the sake of their own health and that of their community might help somewhat. But I doubt it.

Was surprised when my friend in Sydney posted a picture at a zoo and they all had masks on outdoors. Is this a requirement there? I thought everything had gone back to normal in Australia

Probably just a piss take, masks were never mandatory in NSW just advised on public transport and in retail..but safe distance is only 1.5m. You will see probably probably more mask use in Asian suburbs but usually it’s 50/50. Hospitals do insist on masks and you need a green tick on on your phone App to get in, plus they use those thermal cameras.

Other than that the restrictions are not that invasive, you only allowed a max of 20 from outside your home at your house, but you can visit a restaurant in a group of 30. Indoor dining and drinking is limited to 1 per 4m2 and outdoor dining and drinking 2m2. Pubs and restaurants are fairly full, they all require scanning a code or the App. Sporting stadiums are limited to 75% capacity.

Weddings are limited to 150 persons but double to 300 on 1st December, Christmas parties have a max of 300 as long as the 4m2 can be observed otherwise numbers is limited on area of the venue and you need to scan the code or App

Not quite normal but close enough, was 31C today and I going take the kids to the waterpark on Sunday.

I wonder would people rather the pubs to open or families to return home for Christmas, if given an option.

Tony Holohan has gone beyond parody now

He will be telling kids their parents are Santa Claus on the 6 one soon

Faimly home obviously but pubs in a regulated environment i don't see as an issue.

Id rather you can't travel to a pub outside your 5KM radius and if there is an outbreak at least its isolated. Bar man would have to ID.

It would depend on where they were returning from. New Zealand, Eastern Canada, Taiwan, Greenland.. yes come on home.

The rest the world, its going to be Skype or Zoom Im afraid.

A lot of the pubs in the North are reopening tonight, and there is nothing to stop residents from the ROI from popping over for a meal and a few drinks. Its going to be down to individual choice.

I think for a lot too it'll likely be sure they can come to Ireland, but can they get back to where they live if they do.

UK and EU is one thing for that, but can people living in the US or Australia be able to actually return there if they do come here.

For your family, perhaps, for others it will be different. Some people have already come home for the Christmas period as they can work remotely. One of my own children arrived home recently and will be returning after Christmas.

For the US there will be no problem if they are citizens or have a green card.

Well they aren't seeing as they're closed for another 2 weeks after last night's extension. Anywhere that opens will be quickly shutdown by the PSNI I would say.

Was a complete mess up there anyway, until this week they didn't know if it was midnight Thursday or midnight Friday when restrictions lapsed. Turned out it was midnight tonight so they had a bit more time to get the extension last night
