So the last few days of Christmas shopping will be nuts in the Dublin shopping centres as tens of thousands from surrounding counties pile in to get their last bits. Seems like a sensible plan.

All retailers can open under level 3 no?

Yes all shops can open under level 3 unless they do a level 3+

Shops will open for sure but can people be sensible, or I guess what I'm asking is WILL people be sensible?

More options at Christmas if Covid cases keep falling, says HSE's chief clinical officer

"On December 1, Nphet will make a recommendation based on public health and the Government will make a decision based on broader interests, based on employment and the economy, he said."

    https://www.irishexaminer.com/news/arid-40081484.html

Phase 5 is meant to end on 1st of December

A slip up from Henry or is he saying the actual NPHET plan?

Not a chance people will be sensible. Look at some of the comments on here as proof of same.

Lack of personal responsibility is a big issue with Irish people in general.

As he is quoted in the article, he's an optimist! Nolan is too. The CMO likes to dampen down enthusiasm and operates in levels of confidence in outcomes.

Yes, but a lot of people would travel to large shopping centres in neighbouring counties for Christmas shopping purposes.

I find this strange. It’s so out of kilter with our published figures. Plus they’ve, what, a quarter of the population? So an even higher rate again.

Who are these unfortunate deaths, is what I’d ask. Middle-aged, averagely healthy parents that just randomly caught it or nursing home cases of people who instructed their loved ones not to resuscitate them?

The Australian approach is going well.
About 36,500 Australians stranded overseas and international students will have to wait longer to come to Australia, after Scott Morrison declared alternatives to hotel quarantine unsafe.

True points but its mad if NPHET are only going to make recommendations on the 1st of December

Everybody should know whats happening at least the Friday beforehand to give people a chance to prepare

If NPHET only make recommendations the 1st government won't make decisions for another few days and that's a few days wasted for retail etc

I'd say the media around the world will be trying to big up these ones, "Look at all these poor people who've been told by their government not to come home for Xmas :'( ", but I don't think people will lap it up.

RTE put up one yesterday evening with 3 people talking about their "heartbreak" after Leo told them not to book flights, and all of the comments on Twitter were, "It's a pandemic yis fvkcing gobsh1tes, stay where you are and come home next year".

Yeah, but that's not a Christmas thing. Those numbers have been like that for months and it's the same for NZ. It shows up the limits of the mandatory quarantine approach.

Still don't see why there would be a mad rush in the last few days before Christmas if all shops have been open from early December.

A health care worker in his early 50s died from covid19 in Northern Ireland few days ago a, his folks passed away from it 2 weeks ago.

I'd like to think so but I can't be sure

cases dont drop sufficiently by December...'we cant open up as much as we wanted to'. cases drop sufficiently 'we cant open up too much to undo all our hard work'

    And on we go

Because the latest leaks seem to suggest it will be level 3 for the first half of December at a minimum, that means you can't leave your county.

Yep fair enough. So, a health care worker and 2 elderly parents, probably mid-70s at the youngest.

Not sure what a health care worker is other than it sounds like a non-emergency type role. Perhaps a nursing home employee so what was his PPE allocation like?

Northern Ireland’s weekly figure should really be 4 times smaller yet it’s about twice as big. Something’s off there. As is their positivity rate.

The HCW who died was a porter in a Belfast hospital.

The fella from Saudi Arabia really pissed me off. Happy out to leave Ireland to coin it in as a software developer in a human rights abusing country, and then he has the cheek to moan about being discouraged from travelling home for Christmas. You've made your bed pal......

There are disturbing accounts coming out about how Health Care workers were treated during the pandemic in the UK. Totally inadequate PPE etc. This is a doctor who was pregnant at the time. Shocking stuff. The amount of HCWs who got infected here was staggering. All of the bull**** around them having got infected anywhere except the hospital.

Yep. As I say, there’s more to this than just ‘numbers are up so stay at home’

A porter would definitely have a high chance of contracting it as would his +75yrs parents.

They are following the UK protocol which has been a disaster. The people in NI follow the UK media in general, which hasn't been adequately informing people to take precautions. Apparently the Foyleside shopping centre in Derry was packed about 5 weeks ago and not one person wearing a mask. (a relation in Donegal told me this, she was the only one wearing a mask and she was being stared at)

Last weekend, the police raided a house party in Belfast where there were 19 people hiding in a bedroom and 2 in the attic. There were similar stories in Septmeber.

Pubs that serve food were open in the North up until a couple of weeks ago.

Also, they were due to lift their circuit breaker restrictions yesterday, but decided to give it another 24 hours, so restrictions are being lifted tonight, so the pubs are reopening.
