Trying to find out/figure out the name of an area in Waterford City

    Ok, this is gonna seem very random but it is a serious post! Perhaps someone from Waterford City might know the name of this area of the city which I am thinking of. 🤔 This is something I remember from donkey's years ago, back in the late 90s when I was in secondary school and growing up in Wexford at the time.

    This would have been just after Halloween in '97 when I went on a transition year school tour over to Bunratty folk park and Limerick City. I always remember us returning home through Waterford that night and it was absolutely lashing rain. Anyhow, I don't know why this has always stuck in my memory but I can remember the bus driving over this small bridge and into a residential area, probably on or near the outskirts of the city I would think.

    I know this probably seems very random and unimportant but I am curious as to the name of the area! I tried looking at google maps but couldn't identify it. Anybody know the name of the area which I am thinking of?? I am not that familiar with Waterford, bar the city centre.

    Must be the bridge over the railway just before you reach the train station. If so it's called Sallypark. Very rundown spot in the old days. Now a dual carriageway.

    That possibly is the place I am thinking of. Another thing I remember though which might point to a different place in the city, is that we stopped at a McDonalds somewhere near that residential/suburban area. One of the McDonalds in Waterford is on the Cork Road now so maybe somewhere around there perhaps?

    If you were anywhere near the Cork Road you were lost. It had to be Sallypark. You wouldn't have even crossed the (main) bridge on your way to Wexford.

    What was the name of the pub on the river side, do you recall ? I'm going back to the Eighties, now. I could be totally delusional :D but I could swear it had coloured lightbulbs around it.

    We probably did get lost that evening! Wherever that McDonalds was located back then we were in that general area.

    Dunno for sure but two pubs down there were Sallypark Inn and the Sally Tavern

    The place I am thinking of is more in the city suburbs. It's a while ago but come to think of it, maybe it's an overpass type bridge I remember.

    There are 3 "bridges" relatively near to the McDonalds on the Cork Road. It would have had to have been a fairly strange route the bus driver brought you on to cross over any of them though.

    Check these out on Streetview, see if they ring any bells. The 3rd one is I guess you could argue the only proper bridge, the first two are roads that cross water if anyone is being pedantic about it :P

    I’m fairly new to Waterford and I was fascinated by that video. Amazing to think that people lived where the new road is now. How do this come about? I’ve tried to find out online what the history of Sallypark is but I couldn’t find anything.

    No there wasn't. The first one opened on the Cork Rd. I think about 1994 but it certainly wasn't there before 1992

    The sallypark bridge is an overpass alright as the rail line is under it. Its the only bridge like that around.

    Sallypark was only ever a "marginal" community sandwiched between the cliff and the railway/river. There were one or two businesses down there like Swan Plastics who are still there. Many properties were long since abandoned before the plan to bring the current DC road from the Kilkenny/Dublin side and obviously bit by bit people were moved out and the remaining properties bought up when the scheme became active.

    The Punters Rest was JJ Harney's who was also a bookie and Gene Ronan had the Sally Tavern.

    Yeah the old bridge over John's river basically at the end of Poleberry and Bath street.

    You would have taken a left out the cork road from there and been at McDonald's within a couple of minutes easy.

    Ok, maybe don't quote me on this but I think I may know the area you are thinking of. An old college pal of mine is from Waterford and his family lived in the Lismore Heights area of the city. It's been a while but I seem to remember there being a bridge or overpass, similar to how you describe, leading into one of the residential streets somewhere in that vicinity.
