    Who are these new listeners?

    MOST
Radio shows got an audience COVID-bump in the last JNLR due to people being at home all day. Of course Noel Kelly and RTE would have you believe it's the stunning work of their top class talent such as Mr. Duffy, D'Arcuy and Turdriddy that is making people listen.............

    Who are these new listeners?

Have there been any little glut of new Boardsies on de thread? Haven't studied dat. Some people listen and laugh AT de Joe show like us, some explore de internet with de Googul an dat and come across Boards, and de thread. Going on my own behaviour, and what various Boardsies report, people lurk and laugh, often before signing up, and gingerly begin to throw in de odd comment before getting more fully on board.

So maybe we could do our own survey on next thread aimed at people who have first posted or have first lurked on the thread since March 2020. I listen mainly because de radio is on in the background and too lazy to change the dial / I now listen because I find it genuinely informative of social life in Ireland.

Some interesting figures this article from The Irish mirror... NEWS
Ryan Tubridy, Joe Duffy and Miriam O'Callaghan prove worth as RTE receives record radio ratings
But the latest Joint National Listenership Report (JNLR) for the period October ’19 to Sept ‘20 revealed 2FM plummeted listeners

    BY KATIE GALLAGHER
    Irish Mirror -

Ryan Tubridy and fellow RTE heavy hitters Joe Duffy and Miriam O'Callaghan proved why they're worth the big bucks after running away with this year's radio ratings.

Meanwhile, the latest Joint National Listenership Report (JNLR), for the period October ’19 to Sept ‘20, showed 2FM's struggle to retain its audience as listeners plummeted.

Their rivals over at Today FM recorded huge audience growth, with a weekly listenership of 877,000, 100,000 more than nearest competitor 2FM.

    To break it down:

The Ryan Tubridy Show, which airs weekdays from 9am - 10am on RTE Radio One, saw an increase of 47,000 this year, bringing his reach to 381,000.

Liveline also recorded mammoth figures after its raging success over the summer with the likes of the infamous Normal People debate - jumping 41,000, meaning the audience is up to 404,000, the biggest figure recorded for the show in a decade.

Morning Ireland also had record breaking ratings, pulling in 491,000 listeners, up 62,000 year on year.

But it was RTE stalwart presenter Miriam O’Callaghan’s weekend show that proved the JNLR winner this year, jumping a massive 82,000, bringing her Sunday listenership up to 318,000.

Other winners on RTE's Radio One included Ray D'Arcy and Claire Byrne who also grew their audiences.

Claire, who took over the 'Today with' radio slot left vacant by Sean O'Rourke's retirement just a few months ago now boasts 369,000 listeners compared to 315,000 in September last year, while Ray D'Arcy is up from 219,000 to 242,000.

Speaking about the figures, Peter Woods, Head of RTÉ Radio 1, said the ratings proved "how important" radio was in people’s lives in the face of adversity.

Meanwhile, despite recording losses across the board in music-heavy station RTE 2FM, top boss Dan Healy said they were expecting the fall as people evidently made the transition from music to talk radio during the pandemic.

It comes as the Breakfast Show with Doireann Garrihy and Eoghan McDermott dropped 9,000 listeners, down to 126,000, whilst Tracy Clifford dropped 12,000 to 130,000.

The Drivetime slot with Jenny Greene fell by 26,000, down to 113,000 this year.

Jennifer Zamparelli's numbers also fell by 4,000 to 152,000.

Elsewhere, music proved a massive success for Today FM across its daytime schedule with Mairead Ronan’s lunchtime show surpassing 100,000 listeners, up to 14,000 just one year into her new slot.

Meanwhile, Fergal D’Arcy broke records in the afternoon with 22,000 more listeners tuning in to this show from 2-4.30pm, bringing his audience to 125,000.

Matt Cooper’s The Last Word followed suit, increasing his drivetime audience by 13,000 to 152,000.

Ian Dempsey's breakfast show recorded 179,000 listeners - a rise of 2,000 on last year.

In mid-morning, Dermot & Dave are also celebrating a record audience high of 183,000, up 19,000 year on year making them the most listened to show in that time slot on commercial radio.

The report showed Newstalk is enjoying an all-time high weekly reach of 804,000 listeners, up 62,000 on this time last year.

The station’s primetime programmes recorded highs with The Pat Kenny Show growing its audience by 15,000 to 155,000 and Lunchtime Live with Andrea Gilligan growing its audience by 13,000 to 102,000.

It's a very complicated Al Gore Riddim dat only a Matty Matticks genius like Mr. Duffy could solve:

Host's Weight x Average Guff Expended Per Show x Annual Fees x FunnyFrydays x Plug-eens x Deaths x Cancers x So To Speaks Yearly Total - Stolen Items Returned to a Presbytery = Da Lahv Lahn Carbon Footprint and dat

Ah here leaving pressies for the nursing homes is not the Liveline way Surely the property should be left into the local presbytry for the local padre to pony up to the wunderful wunderful medics in the wunderful wunderful 10 star nursing homes so to speak. Just hope that the gifts arent put into safes by the medics and sold online.

Maybe though the padres are brushing up on their chalice work for ratemypriest ie. Sr Monica Mary and Ann from Kiltimagh are tough reviewers apparently.

I remember when I was a kid in de 60s or very early 70s, pre-teen, and of course always found Mass dreary. One fine day there was a Gold moment when some guy stood up shouting abuse at de priest in Rathgar and gave some speech dat was beyond me, but was it fun!
