So we can all have more contacts over Christmas? Contacts will increase anyway.
You want to kick it down the road for the extra two weeks and perhaps ensure it's a level 3.5 after Dec 1 before a L2 for the Xmas holidays?

I'm more for living with covid at the expense of Xmas and letting businesses make some money for the next 6 months.

I want to make sacrifices now to have a good Christmas and drive the cases down so hopefully a vaccine will be here before we rise high enough for a 3rd Level 5

    https://www.criver.com/eureka/what-history-tells-us-about-vaccine-timetables

Article about the time needed for the technical development of a vaccine is almost invariably and grossly underestimated.

On the plus side, everyone seems delighted with the news. My neighbour is already planning on her hols next year...

I think it was mistake too end restrictions 2 weeks early during the summer so think they should stick to December plan this time, less cases around the longer have until next round restrictions and maybe even vac will arrive by then

Even the RTE 6.01 was very positive today.

Even George Lee couldn't nay say. I nearly wept for joy.

“Level 5 was totally unnecessary,” one senior figure at the centre of the administration told me. The evidence was at best sketchy, the source said.

When I put this to another person in a similar position, they agreed unhesitatingly. So did another person working at a senior level in this area. Their view is that Level 3 – once it was genuinely implemented – was working.

Some very interesting quotes in that article. Also surprising as the virus was out of control when level 5 was eventually called.

It must be tough on George when you get a day like that with some positive news.

I was looking at the 14 day rolling average cases per 100k. We are still too high up at 168.5. Although we are doing better compared to most. Finland, Norway and Estonia have lower numbers on that metric at 53.4, 112.5 and 129.4 respectively.

It should be level 3 for the last two weeks of November, with a review on Dec 1 for Level 2 commencing after that weekend.

Christmas is so important for some people and we know it is critical for a lot of retail and businesses.

We can’t have the country held up when the cases and positivity levels are so low. And now it is just unfair for some retail who can open and some who can’t when the same risks apply.

Tony will probably look to extend regardless of case numbers.

Remember, we had 4 cases and 0 deaths during the summer and still refused to lift various restrictions.

And he was ultimately proven right. Look at the Czech Rep, look at Poland. We are avoiding a massive second wave sweeping Europe because of the lockdowns

I never once thought we would ease anything before December no matter how small new infections become. I wouldn't even mind further restrictions if it meant we could have level 2 for the month of December.

Hello. Unfortunately we will not have L2 for December, but on the other hand, in a sense a better and more bespoke suite of measures aimed specifically at enabling the most sensitive family elements traditional at Christmas. A very specific variant of Level 3 with a schedule laid out in advance to enable people to best plan and enjoy their holiday season.

In actual fact, the government were backed into an impossible position by NPHET without being able to give Level 3+ the requisite time to work and prove itself. The reality is that the incidence rates and numbers dropped significantly during the period that Level 3+ can be attributed as the cause.

Superb article in The Irish Times today - https://www.irishtimes.com/news/health/back-off-lockdowns-and-protect-vulnerable-say-irish-doctors-1.4404553

How would you see that "bespoke suite of measures" working? One of the problems I can see with Christmas is that people are already planning for it (who's coming over for dinner etc.), but NPHET can't really predict where we'll be in late December. If NPHET come out with a revised set of measures in mid-December many people will not be paying any attention. You'd really need to be making a decision now and starting to communicate it.

    MelbourneMan Holohan,

The time for an awareness campaign on the safety of the upcoming vaccine has come. The government can do a really good thing here and help educate the people of Ireland. People are hesitant whereas they shouldn't be.

I've seen a lot of gimmick posters on boards over the years, but pretending to be an NPHET insider is one of the most unique.....

Yeah I hear you and many would agree with you.

I look back at returning holidayers in August, communions etc that set this off and see it happening again after a Christmas of excess. I feel the blunt tool of shutting businesses to reduce contacts hides the natural time needed for an outbreak to settle with SD, masks and proper contact tracing etc in place.

Real world evidence (like the hairdresser in the US who had 100 close contact customers after her diagnosis, that she didn't infect because she and them wore masks for example) is under appreciated in favour of the simpler one rule for all restrictions.

Even with the vaccine I think we've many months of this ahead of us still and finding out what really promotes spread or more importantly what does not, in a living with "insert infectious disease name" world will be useful for when the next pandemic inevitably comes to pass.

What's the options on this Mink strain. We might get a vaccine to the masses by march 2021 but if this Mink yoke is taking off we will have something else to worry about

Definitely an opening of all businesses apart from pubs should be on the cards very soon. Retail is making very little difference to the spread since we already have retail anyway and more shops = less crowds and queues. Now everyone crams into the few shops that are still open. Also make a huge difference to employment. Gyms a tricky one.

What are the restriction differences between here & NI, that would be considered when deciding what to open. As not working as well north of border info unfortunately so worth while knowing what is being done differently. People may say retail not a factor in cases but could it be more people out about wandering around town will spread virus not necessarily the time in a shop

I highly doubt the restriction we had over the summer are having any impact now in October/November.
The reason we are avoiding a massive second wave is because we closed a lot earlier than others.

Why are you sitting here and waiting for them to reply to the thread? It's sad how you are waiting for them to post. They are probably busy.
