Why are they cutting down trees?

    Why in the name of God are they cutting down trees around Newcastle at the moment? They did the same last year, these trees are hardwoods which have stood for years and don't appear to be causing any problems.

    I cannot fathom why.

    Because Cllr Crowe is sick of trees (2008)

    Trees can cause trouble and make noise with the wind dropping leaves and falling down.

    I've witnessed this anti-social behaviour with my own eyes, swaying away as though jiving to the Devil's tune. Littering their unsightly leaves everywhere which costs the Council tonnes of money to hire sweepers, machines, bins.
    They are a nuisance.

    They were asked to leaf but apparently they refused to until next spring, so they're being forcefully removed.

    There is a FB group called Save Ireland's Trees - that has some insight

    Some are ridiculously being cut down to avoid insurance risks and/or damage to pavements from roots
    Others seem to be being felled indiscriminately

    It is totally ridiculous, crazy and sad - but has been happening all over Ireland - even in places you'd never expect - like remote roads in Kerry.

    Will you be happy to pay the compensation when a tree comes down & injures or kills someone? You do realise that land owners/house owners are responsible for maintaining trees & hedges on their property in a safe condition.

    Galway City Council does not have any tree listed under Tree Preservation Orders, which is absolutely negligent of them.

    A bit of common sense thinking required. The City Council isn't paying expensive contractors to cut down trees for the laugh. It's trees that present a potential danger to the public or property, specifically in light of storms and bad weather.

    Most trees are safe from the axeman.
