    I said it earlier.
Cometh the man, cometh the hour. And cometh he did.

Favourite part: when he referred to Village as some fringe publication etc. etc!

That's very like Clinton's defense of "its hard to know what "is" is. And in a similar vein it'll loom large over Varadkar long after this week.

Nah in the whole scheme of things this year it is unimportant. He will have learned a big lesson and it will blow over.

You know the way the T shock was asked is this the only time he’s done this and he said “yes”.
It felt like a real leading question as if there’s another story to tell - oldest trick in the book if you want to nail someone is get a good decent denial first- anyone think there’s another episode here?

    Thought the same myself.

Actually that was an interesting interaction now that you mentioned it! He said it was not worth his while suing for defamation because they were a small outfit. So if he could sue them and win it would vindicate him. However he's basically said that wasn't worth his while because it probably wouldn't be financially worth it if he won. So his reputation has a financial value to him?

He said he hasn't decided yet.

Ita obvious standreds change depending on party....no other party would put up with people leaking confidential info, only fg

Mmmm......Shane Ross just published a couple of hundred pages of cabinet confidentiality as have many before him. Leo should ask Foghorn voice Doherty has he ever leaked ......oh......Luckily Foghorn voice has never been let near a cabinet.

Anyway talking to journo's has now become a high risk activity for all

Vincent Browne, who some on here were crediting with this scoop*, said the same on Twitter.

*in pretending they knew what the Village was, only showed that they hadn't read it in years.

Back to telling lies I see blanch without having the bravery to name me and this isnt the first time Ive caught you doing this either, its become a regular habit of at this stage. I never once claimed Vincent was behind this scoop, it is clearly the work of the editor Michael Smith whose name is under the article. This what I actually said about Vincent

Village magazine are trolling Varadkar at this stage. Id say Vincent Browne is having a good laugh about all this in the office. Vincent had Denis o'Brien personally threatening to sue him with the solicitors letter mentioning that his family home would be in danger. Browne batted that off and o'Brien did nothing in the end, it was just his usual bluster. So Id say Vincent is getting a good laugh at Varadkar threatening to sue Village for defamation when they know they are telling the truth, he is well used to empty threats.

And it is clearly you who havent read Village in years- Vincent Browne is still writes for Village magazine, as he has since he founded the title. If you bought it you would have known that but clearly you didnt, even more spoofing from yourself.

In future blanch before you go telling lies about what another poster posted maybe think twice to avoid being called out on it and ending up with egg all over your face.

I just read Gemma O Doherty is a journalist contributer to the village.

    Is that true?

There can be cabinet meetings still going on and Mícheál Linnane is on RTÉ saying its just been agreed or he is hearing that some decision has been made. It's part and parcel of politics. The political correspondents for the radio stations, papers and TV shows need their few scraps to keep them on side.

This wasn't even a juicy leak. How do people think papers get exclusives?

A more interesting perspective is why did Bowes think he could influence Government policy by getting close to Varadkar, just what other dodgy things are waiting in his business past if he's upset he couldn't get what he wanted through back door deals?

Same with Cosgrave really, who made up stories about nurses dying of covid to make FG look bad largely because Kenny refused to give him special treatment for the web summit. Do either sound like honest brokers?

I said that at the start that he wouldn't
He'd win the case,I've no doubt about that, because the village wouldn't be able to prove law breaking
    But he couldn't be arsed
In his eyes it would take 3 years and be hanging or adjourned at election time
Not because of it being a small publication
    He's too cute
Id say paddy cosgrave and the village are raging tonight

The problem with the questions on leaking is that there will always be degrees of leaking and so it's difficult to pin Leo or anyone else on what's an offence.

That's why there are protocols and appropriate ways of carrying out such things. To protect the politician, civil servant and tax payer.
Once you step over the line you are putting yourself in a bad situation.
That is why it's very important not to dismiss or excuse away such actions. We need to have accountability and consequences if FF/FG or any government expect to be trusted or taken seriously.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,543 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

    So she was?

As I recall it the Village issued a statement disassociating themselves from her political views which they said she didn't have while writing occasional articles for them. I'd imagine the Indo would do the same and any other publication she may have worked for.

Nice try at shooting the messenger, very Maurice McCabesque.

don't know tbh , the FF defense has tied them to Leo

Though some of the opposition were poor.

Pearse Doherty was very good and Peader Tobin and Catherine Connolly were very good in what they asked/said quite clever and well spoken but perhaps lack the edge or fear factor that Doherty brings when he is on song.

AOR was poor and seemed a little unprepared. The independents weren't great.

Anyway I think leo will be safe regrettably but his reputation is in the toliet for the moment.

Finally playing the gay card was lame as fcuk against mattie mcgrath.

Pearse Doherty is an incredibly aggressive individual with links to the IRA. He had a very homophobic slant on many of his questions today.

    He’s a scumbag.

Calling the reputation of the whistleblower/s into question doesn't change the fact that Leo was a bold boy and he got caught.
Dominic Rabb the British minister accused Leo of leaking during the Brexit negotiations, seems he more than likely was correct as we learned Leo has form.

Did you watch it? I am guessing no because there was no homophobic slant... unless friend is a homophobic slant now.

There was no homophobic slant in Doherty's line of questioning.

Mattie McGrath on the other hand...

What relevance does that have to the Leo saga of November 2020?
