Disability benefit and rent a room

    Hi all
    Asking a question on behalf of a friend.
    The guy is on Permanent disability Benefit due to an accident he was involved in.
    He owns his own house.
    Is he able to rent a room under the 14k per annum tax exempt scheme, without that interfering with his disability benefit from a department of social protection point of view?

    I believe the first 20% is disregarded and the rest assessed.

    Likely to lose additional benefits like fuel allowance too

    Hi OP, you will need to clarify what payment your friend is on. It will be either Invalidity pension, Disability allowance or Illness benefit. There is no such thing as permanent disability benefit.

    You are allowed 5% of the value of the rent for wear and tear of the room and up to a maximum of 15% for periods the room is empty in between lettings (but not before first letting). Other than that it’s assessed as means euro for euro. In my opinion not worth doing it. If your friend also currently lives alone they will loose the living alone increase.
