Tyre valve issues - the shame!

First of all....apologies for the stupid question.

Having not owned a bike for 30 years, I got one last year for a bit of short commuting and havent had to deal with the problem of changing a tyre!!

My wifes bike - the valve seems to be gone on the tyre insofar as there is nothing wrong with the tyre itself but once you take the pump off the valve, all the air rushes out!! Is it possible to replace the valve or best off the whole thing?

It says on the tyre its 37-622 28 x 1 5/8. Do i need a new tyre or a new inner tube? Is there even inner tubes anymore??!

What bike - I mean it's probably an inner tube, but if its a new bike it might be tubeless (but unlikely as I don't think there are that many sold tubless or at least not in a way where you wouldn't know about it)

It sounds like a puncture anyway, and assuming that it has a tube, take the tyre off and find the hole in the tube. Try and keep note of the position of the tube in the tyre and inspect the tyre for anything sticking through it (When putting the tyre back on, line up the valve with the logo on the tyre to help this in the future).

Remove any debris and replace with new tube (or repair). Check out youtube etc if you need pointers on how best to get tyre off/on again.

Oh wait - I re-read - the air rushes out the valve, or in general it flattens?

Might just need a new valve core if it's the car type valve.

Bike is at least 10 years old. Cheap Eurotrek.

It rushes out the valve. So the only wait it held air was to get the dust cap on really quick!! It was fine one day until i was pupming it and this happened!! But dont tell the boss!! I've been getting away with it since.

Any motor factors will sell you a valve and valve key for small money. That sounds like a fix, at least it's worth a try

Yeah its the Shrader type. My local halfords doesnt have the valvle replacement kits. And i dont really have an LBS where i am. I got my electric bike in Cycle Superstore but i dont see them on the website.

Surely a new valve is easier then a new tube if the dust cap is currently keeping the air in, it's 100% the valve is the problem.

A car valve and a valve key can't be hard to get.

A new tube cost a fiver, can be bought anywhere and is easy to replace.

It's easier and quicker to replace a valve then a tube

Maybe valves and valve keys are hard to source but I'm thinking they aren't to be fair.

Obviously you should do as you please.
But as all of the people who cycle regularly will tell you: replace the tube.

Tube is 10 years old, valve is easier and quicker to replace but you should get used to changing tubes anyway as it will be required at some point, and a valve won't fix a puncture/
