09 Toyota Prius - Sell privately or Trade in against newer model

Anyone give an idea of what price my Prius might get, with current NCT certificate, or with a fresh one for a year.

I have managed to get a date to test it for next week, so will put it in and hopefully will pass, and if so what might it sell for.

I am looking to change to a 2018 Prius Business Edition, price from mainstream dealer is straight cash 23k,(trade price 26k) or 20k plus my Prius as is, so effectively 3k as a trade-in, but is the 23k a reasonable straight cash price for this car, mileage is circa 30k km.

If I can get a good bit more tham 3k privately then would be better to sell and pay 23k cash only for Prius, if not then will trade in and be done with it, as it owes me not a lot as have had for 10years, and recently had its cat stolen, hence why I’m getting rid of it as don’t want it to happen again.

Looking at other garages the price seems good, but dont know how much they advertise for to be able then to reduce to make it look like a good deal,

You're looking for 4k privately, vs 3k on a hassle free trade in. IMO, at 4k if it's priced right it should sell quickly. If it doesn't sell then either A) Reduce it down such that it's worth your time to still sell it privately vs trade, or

Trade it in for 3k and safe yourself some hassle. Even ask the dealer can you buy for 20 + your car or 23k cash, but to give you a week or so to see can you sell your prius privately.

Thanks Black_knight for your speedy reply, and I think dealer will be ok with what you propose, as he said if you can get more than 3k then sell privately,

What do you think of the price of replacement car, 23k for 18 Prius, with low miles and additional 12mt warranty, as would be up in 2021 for normal Toyota 3yr warranty,

Part of me wants to keep the Prius as been good to me, and not driving much at the moment, normally 15k a year, and we have a recent second car, but also worried about the cat since was stolen a few weeks ago,

That car is not the cheapest in the UK, but its the cheapest main dealer price I could find, it comes in at around 22 k with VRT.

So your dealer price is not too bad, and as black knight said hassle free with the dealer.

Would you not consider a plug in car of some kind?

Your old car was subject to cat theft, would the new one not be the same or have Toyota done something to rectify this?

Thanks for the response, from what I can gather later models are not being targeted due to changes in materials used but also how its housed on the car.

Open to correction, as the theft has pushed me to change current Prius, didnt think really about Plug-in, but suppose for low miles would be a good saving, anyone have any thoughts/experience on this?

Similarish to the prius shape would be the Hyundai Ioniq. It comes in hybrid, PHEV and full EV. The EV gets great reviews, so i'd only assume the PHEV is a decent enough spec'd car too. Not sure how common they are though, most on Donedeal I could see were pure hybrids.

Funny enough, the full EV is cheaper than the PHEV. Around 18-20k for a 2017 (maybe 2018 reg).

Honestly its too hard to look for plug in hybrids on donedeal, no option for them and then Irish dealer prices are at a minimum 1000 euro over UK prices, some ridiculously so .

The car passed its NCT yesterday, so now NCT'd till End Oct 21, Taxed till Aug 21

I have had the car since Aug 2010, 100k miles on it, in good condition for its age, looking for €4,650 ONO,
I'm in no great rush to sell, as replacement car can wait and not really driving much these days.

I would prefer Ire/UK car,

the gen 3(2010 - 2016) were all 5 seaters, theres very little diffrence in the phev and the regualr hybrid.

the newer one, (2016 -- 2020 ) seems to be a 4 seater, didnt know that, but the newest verson seems to be back to a 5 seater.
