Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

East coast VW mechanics

    Any recommendations for good VW indies on the east coast that know the ins and outs of classic and questionably classic (Mk3 1.8 GL :D ) Golfs? - ideally Co. Wicklow.

    Doesn't necessarily have to be an indie come to think of it, there's absolutely nothing wrong with a main dealer if there are great mechanics in the workshop.

    Surely golfs are run of the mill mechanics, should be loads of guys well able for these.

    There is a lad who is based near Navan or Slane I think who specialises in classic VWs .. John Moss is his name as far as I remember .. don’t have any more details but I think he is still in business

    Of course there is Jon White in Castledermot, but he is a long way from the east coast.

    To be fair a MK3 golf isn't a very specialised car, any decent garage should be able to do any repairs that would be required. The engineering and technology in a mk3 is quite basic by the standards of something any way modern

    Thanks for the replies guys - the interest in a specialist is less about the engine that's in it, and more about the engine that's going to be in it :D

    For what it may be worth, I don’t have a classic VW but have been happily driving new ones every few years for a while now, bought & serviced by main dealer Sinnott Autos in Wicklow town.

    I heard about some nutter who widened a Rabbit and put in a Porsche 928 engine but an Audi 1.8T is the most likely and sensible option, which gives a decent power increase without too much faffery, and she'll still be listed as a 1.8.

    All that's happened under the bonnet so far is basic recommissioning; a new throttle body gasket, full service, timing belt, distributor cap and a few other minor bits. I have a new power steering belt that I should really put in too - the current one's crappy. There's a slightly sketching sounding bearing somewhere too but the old 1.8 is pulling surprisingly well.

    Thanks for the Sinnott's tip - I'd also heard that one of the guys there is really good with older Golfs, so it's great hearing a second voice.
