The handball rule is an absolute farce. How the **** do you jump for a header with your hands by your side? Dier with his back to the ball and it’s headed at him FFS

It's the same for everyone. That penalty for Everton yesterday was the same. His arm was down by his side and he wasn't even looking at the ball.

Think it was Alan Smith that said it on commentary on the match - you'll soon have attackers aiming at the arms of defenders if it's that easy to get a penalty these days, it's farcical

As a Newcastle fan I'm saddened that's been given as a penalty. It's a terrible decision/rule. It's not what football needs and something should be done to change things.

and yet only in England is it a nonsense, afaik

This is the rule from UEFA isn't it? It's going to be harsh on everyone equally.

In fairness to the refs they all seem to be on the same page bar the one that wasn't given against Arsenal (I think) last week.

Handball stuff is mad. Looked a bit dodgy in normal time but in the replay it was clear that he had no idea where the ball was, his arm was only up as part of jumping.

I know it’s the same for everyone, but it’s a complete joke. I didn’t see the match yesterday but the penalties given against Doherty and Lindelof (or was it Maguire) last week were bad enough, the one today is even worse. Like if you can’t jump for a header, how are you supposed to defend crosses? Every time there’s a block now you have the attacking team claiming handball just because they might get a lucky penalty. Newcastle did it twice at the end and got lucky with one of them. It’s farcical.

I'm pretty sure Kane tried just that in this game. Awful rule. Idiots.

It really is beyond a joke at this stage.

Back in 2015 or so referees opened the season with the decision to enforce rules around shirt-pulling inside the box far more harshly, they did so for about 3 weeks before getting bored of it and realising how much of a mess it was, all we can do is hope the same happens here.

Also the uncalled Havertz handball yesterday was infinitely more impactful than Dier's today.

(Yes I understand the phase of play rules, I just think they're idiotic)

Flicking a coin at the start of the match and decreeing that the winner of the toss gets a 1 goal head start would also be equally harsh on everyone.

Doesn't stop it being an awful rule that adds an element of luck to the game that destroys the game.

Disgusted with these decisions, ruining the game.

This is what all of these pundits and football managers wanted. They wanted consistency and the laws cleared up. Now they want to go back to interpretations, how they can moan about consistency again.

It's not the law makers that are to blame. Its TV Pundits and Football managers. It's TV Companys who's half time and post match coverage revolves entirely around refereeing decisions. I watch a lot of different sports. Pretty much anything bar GAA and Sycronised swimming but no other sport speaks about Refereeing decisions more than football. It's not even close.

If they want to go back to common sense, stop haranguing the referees.

And this is the "free kick" that led to the penalty call. What an absolute cluster****.

David Elleray, the former top-flight official and Harrow schoolmaster, has overseen well over 100 law amendments since becoming IFAB’s technical director in 2016, right down to how to take a kick-off (you can now pass it backwards) and, the following year, where to stand (you’re allowed in the opposition half — which, naturally, made passing it backwards easier).

Some of the changes have been for the better. Allowing players to stand in their own penalty area when a keeper takes a goal kick, for example, has encouraged teams to pass out from the back. But you’ll struggle to find many players, managers, referees or supporters who think that IFAB has got it anywhere near right when it comes to the handball rule. “It’s just a mess,” says one source.

I knew someone English would be involved.

The thing about the handball and VAR reviews is that they can’t even consistently fûck it up, nothing against DCL and Mount yesterday and then the likes of Dier and award being given.
