Am I silly thinking the government won't do another national lockdown? It'd be economic suicide.

Once the first one ended, I thought that there's no way they'll go back to that. Now? I'm not so sure.

Two things - If other Euro countries do full national lockdowns, maybe the government might consider!

I think, if numbers fall or plateau over the next 2/3 weeks, cant imagine there would be a lockdown.

If Ireland is an outlier and does a full lockdown while other euro counties don't, Ireland would be loaded with additional debt and would place Ireland at a longterm comparative disadvantage!

They will have to if they have no choice, no government can allow hospitals to be overrun - just look at Israel. Our hospitalisation numbers and ICU need to level off. We should hopefully see the results of what is happening in Dublin in the next week or so.

Thankfully we're not as bad as parts of Europe where clearly restrictions were relaxed too quickly. We need to dig in for Winter, it's up to each of us to do our bit, and hopefully we can get rapid testing and vaccines in 2021 which will allow us to claw our way out of this.

Of course they won't. They will probably place each county at level 5 but that definitely won't be a country wide lockdown, no sireee.

With all the PR people, sorry "special advisors", they'll keep reminding us that it's not a country wide lockdown and we are all very very naughty.

Level 4/5 are essentially national lockdowns bar the schools/collages are still open

The thing is hmmm, that restrictions in Ireland were relaxed way too late. There was a time from June to August to open up the country more than we did. We didn’t do that, the hospitals were deserted and staff sent home. Now they will have to deal with the regular annual derivatives of flu as well as C19. It is not going to be pretty. I hope they are all rested and prepared.

We could have gotten the increase in hospital admissions and dealt with it in the summer instead of now. Nphet and this government have no ability whatsoever to consider multiple of factors going forward and anticipate the future. They only came out with a long term plan in September, which only proves my point.

I still don’t think it’s an option currently. We won’t know until next week. It may become more or less likely depending on hospital admissions / cases.

And the long term plan didn't even last till tea time of the same day before it started to unravel

Exactly. One could go as far and say that the government has lost the support of people for restrictions throughout the summer. They did not communicate what the strategy was, made a mess of green list and fcuk up people travels and holidays for what? They really set themselves up for what is happening now. It does not matter what level of restrictions we are in, none of it is enforceable anyway and the young portion of population, those people who will ultimately pay for all of this, have run out of patience. It is time the government thought about them too.

Couldn’t be more wrong, it’s the exact opposite in fact. We should have held the strict lockdown for far longer at least another month or two and really drive down cases. If it was coupled with closing the airports and ports we could have really go the virus on the back foot. There was still too much of it around when they started opening up and thus it was able to get a foot hold, helped considerably by people who refused to keep away from meeting others in groups, going to houses, not social distancing etc.

Some sort of eternal battle with covid what you are describing there.

    Nox, our new cases were 4, 5, 9, 11, 3, 7, 18, 6, 17 in July.

Why do you think if these numbers were 0, we would be safe from covid now - end of Sept when flu season starts next month? You dont really think we'd be sharpest of cats on the planet to keep covid out of our country do you?

It’s probably been asked a thousand times but what is the closing times of the pubs now that all pubs are back open?

Dublin will be L4 next week and the rest of the country L3. The media spin has already started this week to lay the ground work.

Then we'd be right where we are now next month. That's just kicking the can down the road. Lockdown was right for when it was and how little we knew. We know more now, we know it's down to personal responsibility and C-hygiene. (my new word)

Can you imagine the shaming they are going to do to anyone that tries to enjoy Xmas this year. It will be like the summer holidays again where people were shamed into cancellling their flights to Spain.

Is it because of media spin or hospital capacity? Be honest with yourself.

Nothing. Round and round in the same circles of ****e as now. Time people accepted this virus is out there- it’s the natural world. A vaccine is out only realistic defence. At that only partially so, at best. The rest is just optics and political fluff

So I was just wondering when do people think this will all end , like when will we begin each news round without covid 19 being first item? when will it start to drift off front pages ? basically i cant see us being or doing anything much different a year from today, still restrictions from covid , lockdown to lockdown around the country, nobody at sports events, colleges teaching remote, schools prob on 3 day weeks along with remote. Can anyone really see anything changeing in 12 mmonths? can sports bodies cope with no crowds for another year? pubs opening and shutting sporadically. xmas near enough cancelled etc.

As things are there is no end in sight. Even with a vaccine I believe. There’ll have to be a massive re-check on the strategy. Possibly take some massive cuts in public expenditure to catalyst that sea change unfortunately. As things stand this craziness will keep spinning around like a dog tail

No way that will be happening. There is only so much money printing you can do before the whole thing goes tits up.

    And it's cost 30bn in a deficit.

If it lasts another year, we are ruined.....but we won't be alone, the rest of the world will be broke too.

And then we print more money and then your 75k salary will buy you 3 breads and a carton of eggs? Exaggerating (hopefully) but something's gotta give...
