Given that chromecast outputs HDMI, is there something simple that could record it? Not looking for anything sophisticated, just something that takes hdmi in, passes it thru with the option to record what it is passing thru. Or maybe that is sophisticated??!!

Googling it I can't see anything cheap, widely used, so maybe its not soemthing people need. Use case is not having time to watch sports stuff, but having a Now TV and other streaming subscriptions, would be great to be able to add "on demand" functionality, albeit I know I would need to be on the wifi to tell Now Tv to cast.

Its unlikely you'll find anything, as all of the PPV stream services implement HDCP, meaning it can't be recorded:

It's mentioned on that Amazon link too:
    Amazon wrote:
*** VERY IMPORTANT! PLEASE READ FULLY BEFORE PURCHASING! THANK YOU! *** 1) This device does NOT record or pass-through from sources with HDCP (content protection) enabled, including many HDMI sources such as computers, DVR's, DVD players, etc. The device will show NO SIGNAL from these sources. This does NOT indicate a defective device, but rather that your source has HDCP. 2) This device does NOT support live streaming. It works as a standone device ONLY and will NOT connect to a PC or Mac.
