At least Leinster won't have the excuse of not being familiar with how he interprets the game.

Hold on. Awec has just said something positive about a ref!!! And I didn't think this year could get any more crazy.

I think he's a poor enough referee. Has no real empathy for the game like Nigel Owens. He ls also is very inconsistent with his interpretations and decision making.

    But he's not Clancy.

    Or Lacey.

Sexton wasn't rested against Japan because there was never a game against Japan.

sexton was instrumental on turning the pressure screw on munster.
    he was very good.

I have no problem at all with Ross Byrne and JPG starting

Yep, I wouldnt be surprised at all. Byrne has done a good job in KO games before. No reason he can't this week.

So for next week I'd like to see:

    Byrne Cronin Porter
    Baird Fardy
    Ruddock Doris VDF

    JGP Byrne
    ROL Ringrose
    Lowe Kearney Keenan

Kelleher, Healy, Furlong, Ryan, Deegan, McGrath, Sexton, Henshaw

If the starting XV isn't getting the job done theres more than enough on the bench to rescue it, and we're giving guys time without overplaying them. Other guys are getting opportunities to play and make a statement ahead of further KO games. I do think that XV will be enough. Ulster are 3 games in a row ahead of the final with 1 less days recovery.

I'd probably stick close to the above, with Conan instead of Deegan in retrospect.

Applying Schmidtian logic, Ryan should start if fit enough, with a fully fit replacement on the bench able to come in for him.

Deegan's been in great form this season, started making his mark at European level and made his test debut, but that's been overlooked due to Doris being even better. Would be a shame if he missed the final entirely.

I'd prefer closer to full strength with one or two players rested. Too much rotation there. Not that I don't think it can be done by that team, but now is not to the time to leave anything to chance.

Despite no game actually taking place that week, Sexton was actually injured which meant Jack Carty was named and Joey Carbery was on the bench.

If a game took place. Which it didn't.

Ross Byrne starts with Sexton on the bench. And God King Ryan returns.

Ulster team to play Leinster Rugby, Guinness PRO14 Final, Aviva Stadium, Saturday 12 September (7.35pm, live on Premier Sports / eir Sport):

(15-9) Michael Lowry, Rob Lyttle, James Hume, Stuart McCloskey, Jacob Stockdale, Billy Burns, Alby Mathewson.

(1-8) Eric O’Sullivan, Rob Herring, Tom O’Toole, Alan O’Connor, Iain Henderson (Capt.), Matthew Rea, Sean Reidy, Marcell Coetzee.

Replacements (16-23): John Andrew, Jack McGrath, Marty Moore, Sam Carter, Jordi Murphy, John Cooney, Ian Madigan, Nick Timoney.

    Alby :)

Great to see Henderson back. He had to come straight back in but Treadwell is harshly not in the 23. He was a significant part of Ulster's comeback. Ulster opting for a 6-2 split.

Henderson starting for Ulster...I am surprised.

No idea why Carter is ahead of Treadwell.

  • Registered Users Posts: 24,179 ✭✭✭✭Buer

Henderson back and starting is the big story here.

Cooney, Ludik and Murphy dropped. All the lads that were hauled off at half time last week. 6/2 split. Carter benched too.

  • Registered Users Posts: 16,710 ✭✭✭✭Clegg

Leinster's starting pack is stronger, but Ulster have the more impactful bench. They're looking to finish strongly with that 6-2 split.

I honestly think the 6-2 split is enforced. It makes little sense to me.
