You've almost uprooted a seed that I've had planted in my head these past few months. I keep finding myself looking at 330d's on Autotrader for when I change next. Now I'm wondering is there much point and should I go back to petrol.

    Yes...

    No defo not....

I'd recommend a 330d, maybe a white one. Having a big boot is useful so probably an estate if you are and just be mindful of rwd in winter months so you'll be wanting an xdrive I'd be thinking.

It be a while before I'll be switching. Sure I'm still paying for the 320d :p

If I do got down the F30 road it will have to be either white, Melbourne red or navy.

Capital motors had a lovely red 330d recently that I fell in love with.

I spotted that. Melbourne red in M sport is lovely.

That’s nice alright, I like a lot of the on M Sport stuff too.

Non m sport with the larger engine models seem to lose more money and be harder to shift.

How do I get a better idea of VRT if revenues calculator has the value of the car at 30k but the purchase price would be 21k?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,841 ✭✭✭maddness

    Yes and cheaper to buy!

Purchase price where? Is it an Irish registered car in Ireland for €21k? As far as I know if it's on the calculator you'll have to pay it, and then if it is obviously out and you can support it with ads for similar cars selling for less you appeal it.

    from uk

something along those lines is what I'd be going for if I go that way. Would be a stretch for me though so haven't really decided if I'll go that expensive

Revenue have no interest in how much you paid for the car abroad. They value it for VRT purposes on what they think it is worth here. Also don't forget the Nox charge on top of VRT.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 344 ✭✭chalky_ie

If the car is on the VRT system, that's the price you pay. UK prices can be used for individual assessments(and for arguing the value given by Revenue for an individual assessment) I believe, but you're not paying anything other that the system price, if present.

    Plus the NOX

That's included, they're all euro 6 that I'm looking at so its between 300-400 euro according to the calculator. Could be wrong tho

I put in that car's details and matched the Co2 and nox up.

    CO2 Emissions 149
    Rate of VRT 23%

    CO2 VRT Charges
    (payable on enquiry)
    €7,272

    Revenue NOx Estimate
    NOx Emissions
    67

    NOx VRT Charge
    (payable on enquiry)
    €405

    Registration Tax Total

    €7,677

The way VRT is handled here is infuriating though.

Revenue calculate the VRT based on the OMSP of an Irish car with VRT already paid you end up paying the VRT rate on a price which includes the VRT rate, in a way hiding the inflated cost and paying tax on tax.

Extreme example, but illustrates the point. A car which outside of Ireland costs €100k to purchase, and attracts the highest VRT rate of 36% would make sense for it to have a VRT bill of €36k. But they calculate the VRT % against cars with it already paid meaning the VRT would be calculated on a car cost of around €136k, and the bill would be closer to €49k!

I can't understand how the OMSP can include VRT ......... by definition OMSP shouldn't. Mental.

By definition it should, because any car Selling on the Open Market here already has it’s VRT paid in the Price.

It's like applying VAT to the RRP inc VAT.

Yeah with something like that red one you'd really want to commit to it for at least 5-7 years. The more forgiving suspension is what would attract me to them. Though I hear the xdrive m sports have standard suspension.

On sometging different altogether, I'm considering bringing a mk2 i30 or even an i20 petrol automatic next year for my mother. She's vrt exempt on anything she buys but would she still be liable for Nox ?

Also what's the auto in the hyundais like ?

The X Drive BMW’s have the softer standard suspension, even the m sport cars.

Not the case with the 5 series though. My car has m sport suspension even though it's x drive. I think it's just the 3/4 series for some reason.

Does the car sit a bit higher than normal?

How are you getting on with the car?

My old 535d had variable dampers so sat the same as SE suspension. This is definitely lower and it's very firm. Putting the vin into a decoder also tells me it's 704 suspension which is m sport.

I'm enjoying the car but also miss the torque of the 535d! You need to drive like a bit of a hooligan and rev it high to get the most from it as you know. Wheres with the diesel the power is pretty much instant at low revs. So mostly I just saunter around not really getting the potential. I think the 535d was easier to go quick where the 540i has more drama getting quick. The cabin is a nice place to be though and the sports seats are lovely.

How's your own going madness and would you consider getting a remap?

I love it, it’s a lot of fun even at slow speeds. It’s very fast as it is and plenty of drama when you are pushing on too. It’s very hard riding though and not as comfortable as a Golf R in general. It feels special though.I will map it at some stage but it probably doesn’t need it.

I think it's just going to take you time to get used to driving a petrol car again. Your probably used to driving diesel cars where the rev/torque range is narrower and revving the nuts out of a diesel engine gets you nowhere. I'd say you will enjoy it more once you get used to treating it differently to a diesel.

As far as I know the newer cars like g30 5series and g20 3 series are not like this. They have m sport suspension. It was the previous generation that had se suspension on x drive cars.
