As above my sky Q box was hot to the point where it was almost sore to touch. It was on a shelf with basically no ventilation so I moved it on top of the cabinet thinking that would solve it. Just checked it now and it's still very warm. Is this normal or should I be worried?

Be worried, running hot not good. I did a google and its a known problem. New boxes have an external power supply. If I have a box that runs hot I give it more ventilation by raising it with electrical ducting strips. I don't have sky q and wont for a long time.
