Can you please stop using the term 'banana republic' when it's obvious that you have no idea what it means? Check the definition and then try to use it appropriately. Thanks in advance.

The interview with Michael McNamara (chairman of covid committee) was quite revealing I think. (Irish independent)

He said Ireland had shut down its aviation sector to very little gain, Michael Cawley broke no rules, no scientific evidence for locking down Kildare laoise and offaly - stating it was an overreaction, hospitals are not overrun, no increase in deaths. Said we are in a state of hysteria.

Then we had Leo on Wednesday mentioning heard immunity.... dirty words only a few weeks ago.

Michael Martin accepting that covid will be around right through 2021.

Sounds like no more restrictions any time soon.

We don't live in a politically unstable country with an economy that is dependent upon the exportation of a limited resource product...so we are very far from it.

Its great to see an interview with somebody that has a functioning brain.

Somewhere along the way flatten the curve turned into 0 Covid Island bolix, mainly repeated by people clueless on the mechanic's of society.

The amount of irrational idiots is disheartening tbh

Incidentally, a colleague told me recently over 60% of Ireland's GDP is generated from 10 companies. All FDI of course.

"A fine line" doesn't do it justice

Six One and NPHET look like they’re preparing for another over the top hissy fit...another day with zero deaths and minimal hospitalisations.
We’ve a video circulating of ‘people behaving badly’ in a bar in Dublin to give some fuel to the fear filled & permanently outraged members of society who want to spend their time under lock & key.
We as a society should not accept this without question, i want clear figures as to how many of these people are asymptomatic, how many people are severely affected currently & what their comorbidities are...

What is happening in Melbourne and New Zealand shows eradication is not an effective strategy.

The only way is the unworkable locking in of the elderly until a vaccine arrives

Which one was condemned and considered more dangerous to public Health? The Handful in the Berlin bar or the thousands at the George Floyd protests?

Just wait until the Marxists get into power after the next election. A couple of budgets of tax hikes and service cuts and SF and their fellow travelers will sieze power.

We'll see how long the large FDIs will hang around then.

The country's on a knife edge. A banana republic without the sunshine is a real possibility.

God help the young people who will inherit this mess and this debt.

It's been appalling handled by a bunch of cowards who would rather flush out futures away than be labeled granny killers on social media.

I’m sick and tired of Dr Gabriel Scally thinking he has a say in what we do here in Ireland&his incessant pursuing of a ‘zero Covid Island’ here. Why is the Independent giving him so much airtime? Where is the balance? Why are the media always pushing on hysteria and negativity regarding this virus. I want the facts - how many are dying & how many are in hospital. How many are only asymptomatic or mild currently...where are the journalists covering this??
I will not accept further restrictions again, with its enormous societal & economic cost, nor will I accept Ireland being plunged into an economic depression and for what...

Saint Jacinda has pulled a Trump and suspended democracy.

I presume the SJWs at RTE will savage her with the same ferocity?

Similar article in the Irish Times today. Most experts are in agreement. Eliminate covid as much as possible until effective treatment/vaccine. It's the politicians that can't grasp that. What's the alternative and how's that going for us? Lockdown/unlock/lockdown. Also why would you ignore scientists but accept politicians views? USA Brazil do that to the extreme and that's going well economically and financially from them(not).

Mental health issues rise in Cork due to Covid-19 pandemic

...it's not the pandemic's fault, it's the media overreporting on covid, it's the constantly deeply concerned government officials. It's the amount of information that's in the media. It's all the measures, the limitations... not the sickness. Everywhere you go it's in your face. You go to a shop and there's a person in hi viz jacket pointing at a hand sanitizer (that's antibacterial, not antiviral btw.).

This is what drives people crazy. Hysteria, for like 6 months now. It's a ticking bomb, hopefully it will explode and we'll see thousands of people in the streets protesting against all this garbage.

    https://www.thejournal.ie/italy-discos-coronavirus-5177564-Aug2020/

Italy closes down nightclubs. I love how the Journal trawl the world for any bit of negative covid news but the takeaway from this article is that ground zero for the pandemic in Europe, Italy, has had nightclubs open the past while. So they have basically had things back to normal. In Ireland, we don't have much normality and yet they still revert to lockdown. It's so embarrassing and pathetic what is being done, the lack of spines among the politicians is unforgiveable. They don't realise that by appeasing their grey haired voters who won't be around forever, they are stoking even larger support for SF. The longer they ignore the housing crisis and the more they draw out reopening unnecessarily, the more they are going to be destroyed.

How can people still take the restrictions seriously? Brainwashed sheep, ignorant and utterly devoid of a brain is how I see those who swallow the narrative of the government. Why? Look at the meat plants, all the while the government condoned these practices which lead to spikes in cases and ultimately new lockdown but at the same time Irish people are being told they need to do more. Also, the green list is a solo run, separate to what the rest of the EU is doing despite Harris saying in March we couldn't even control our borders as we are an EU country. If you don't see how the restrictions in Ireland are ridiculous, you are extremely easily lead.

You need to research the difference between a country like the USA with a fixed term parliament system and election dates set in stone, and others (like NZ or Ireland) where the prime minister can call an election at a time of their choosing or it naturally happens when the parliament becomes unworkable and is dissolved.
