Legal status of accepting job offer without signing a contract

Right, I'll try and make it TL;DR.

Wife got a job offer she wasn't entirely happy with but is waiting for other job replies having done the interviews. The company she accepted the offer gave her very little time to think (not the point of this post).

She accepted the offer but has not signed the contract yet.

Can she tell them no if she receives a better offer in the meantime?

Acceptance of the offer is conditional upon reviewing her T&C's of employment and returning a signed contract.

So yes, she can hedge and accept alternative offers but do the declining in a manner that won't burn bridges.
Chances are that hiring is going to be restricted across a swathe of industries soon enough so dont alienate hirers, particularly if it's via a recruiter.

If she hasn't agreed to a contractual notice period, how much statutory notice does a person who has not yet begun employment have to give if they have worked 0 days?

Luckily enough it was through individual companies and not the recruiters.

I have done this myself in the past but that was abroad and I accepted a different offer. Not entirely sure as to the law in Ireland.

    None I would imagine.

Besides, bar your last paycheck getting docked, has anyone ever been punished for giving less than statutory notice?

They can let her go with no notice and no reason anytime in the first 13 week - and will in a heartbeat if it suits them, no matter what papers are signed.

Of course she can quit before she signs.

Just don't expect to work for that manager again.
