England will be kicking themselves even more now at their shìtty first innings total... another 60 runs coupled with their bright start with the ball here would have meant a lot more possibility of victory... Pakistan despite the bad start have breathing room by virture of the poor English first innings total..

A run out now, just as Pakistan had reclaimed the initiative a little. If they can get up anywhere near 300, it's unlikely England will chase that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,549 ✭✭✭MFPM

Rizwan out lbw to Stokes....This umpire's call is problematic....ball was missing stumps but because umpire had given it out, it remains umpire's call.

    Good fielding by Sibley.

Agreed. Although I'd have given it out too if Stokes glared at me!

Exciting day ahead tomorrow, hard to see Pakistan adding significantly to their total in the morning so England will be chasing around 250 tomorrow...they'd have taken that after their 1st innings. 60/40 in favour of Pakistan but I don't think the England top order will collapse again.

They’ll be comfortable enough chasing 260 / 270 or less... anything more is a difficult proposition...

It wasn't missing, it was hitting or just clipping the wickets which is all you need. Ball tracking isn't 100% either so need to bear that in mind when it comes up umpire's call. Umpire's call is the umpire on the field making the decision and I think that is fair enough. At least there are no howlers these days.

I feel Pakistan already have enough. Yasir Shah might come off in the morning and get the lead past 280 and then it's a real struggle. Pakistan attack has everything and batting is only getting harder. Hopefully England take it deep and we can have a great game to watch.

Fair enough, but given the technology is telling us that the ball is 'just clipping' the wickets, there's no way the umpire could possibly be sure in that context thus he should give it not out, if he did that, Rizwan wouldn't have been out.

You might be right, even so it would be the third biggest run chase on this ground, with a bit more discipline Pakistan could be posting a 300 lead and effectively guranteering a victory.

Lead up to 265 now...Shah just slogged Broad for six....
Root said he's be confident they'd chase anything under 260.

25 runs in first two overs.

Pakistan all out for 169. England need 277 for victory.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,861 ✭✭✭Mysterypunter

Lively start, will be a tough chase, Pakistan have a really good bowling attack, looks like too many, but who knows

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,549 ✭✭✭MFPM

England had been going along OK, but Burns gone now out lbw, another umpire's call on review.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,800 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Run rate is just 2.5 but England won’t mind. They have time and only one down.

If England get to 170 needed and only say one more wicket down they’ll cruise.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,800 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Absolutely ridiculous umpiring. Missed the bat by about 4 inches. Poor umpiring.

Root and Stokes really need to put a serious dent in the total with a decent partnership!

Not looking good for England. Going to need something special from here.

Aye they really need a ton from one of the few remaining specialist batsmen, Stokes just gone after a review now as well!

Stokes gone now. No clear deviation noticeable on camera but a flicker on snicko...

It’s strange that hot spot isn’t in use too. Just based on a single sound he’s out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,800 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

In fairness to Pope, that’s unplayable. The pitch did for him there rather then the delivery.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,762 ✭✭✭✭Inquitus

The fat lady is warming up, into the tail now, Woakes coming to the crease....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,534 ✭✭✭Dave0301

Difficult to see England's tail lasting long if Pakistan keep a high standard of bowling.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,800 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Yep, Pakistan clear favorites now, the reality is England need about an 80 partnership from Butler and Woakes, minimum.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,313 ✭✭✭Gillespy

Counter attacking like this the way to go seeing the ball Pope got. It messes with the bowlers and forces the captain to take catchers out. Game on.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,234 ✭✭✭VillaMad

50 partnership for Woakes and Buttler but they will need an awful lot more you feel as one wicket and Pakistan will be confident of blowing through the tail.

Right attitude though to attack everything. Pakistan's approach this morning with the bat seems to be the way to go.

Psychologically big moment when the runs required drops below 100, if Woakes and Buttler can add another 50 odd then the game is in the balance!

Pakistan bowlers starting to look a little jaded. Not as dangerous as they had been. England would have eaten a lot more into this target only for having a habit of hitting some very good shots, straight at the fielders.

it's slipping away from Pakistan, need to break this partnership quickly

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 873 ✭✭✭StackSteevens

Great day for Buttler. Especially given that Bairstow's plan to play for Yorkshire and score some handy runs failed this morning!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,861 ✭✭✭Mysterypunter

England win by 4 wickets, Pakistan had it, but lost it, what exactly does Azhar Ali do? Hasn't scored a run in ages, and a clueless captain, but then again is there a better alternative.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,033 ✭✭✭✭Richard Hillman

I said literally as he was running up to Bowl, why would you have that gap in the slips? And then he edged it through for 4. It's a new ball, put your slips in or at least spread them out.

I have been very disappointed by Azhar Alis captaincy in the test and especially today. From Slips being too far back and not no close catchers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,068 ✭✭✭✭Tom Mann Centuria

Excellent Test match, didn't really see England even getting close after the first innings, or even with five down in the chase.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

Shame Buttler wasn't not out at the end. Deserved to walk off with Woakes after that special innings. This England side have great spirit and never give up. Pakistan will be sick after this loss. Blew it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,549 ✭✭✭MFPM

Couldn't watch today, had to follow online. Great test match, always thought Pakistan would regret that second innings, they needed more runs to play around with. Good foundation built by Sibley and Root and then built upon by Butler and Woakes. Pakistan are a good team but they are inexperienced and that showed today, they dominated the vast bulk of the match but floundered at the crucial moment...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,159 ✭✭✭Royale with Cheese

Hard to drop Woakes now if Stokes goes back to being an all rounder for the next test. Anderson's place in the team looks fairly uncertain, poor ol'Jimmy might not get his 600 the way he's playing now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,313 ✭✭✭Gillespy

Anderson had a mixed game, some good spells and some poor ones. I would drop Archer before him. What's the point if he's not going to bowl like he can? Low to mid 80mph, Curran is much more effective in England and can bat. Wood deserves another chance if they want pace and he will give you pace. Superb in South Africa. If they want to rest Anderson, they have Robinson in the squad now, a like for like replacement. I wouldn't mind seeing him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,033 ✭✭✭✭Richard Hillman

I think Anderson would have been rested anyway for the 2nd test.

I would imagine the team will have very little patience on him in general when he is not getting wickets. He is an incredible sulk and would suck the life out of any dressing room when he is brooding.

Archer is interesting, he was generally low to mid 80s but we've seen previously that he can get 90+, maybe he can't do it consistently, he can look quite disinterested at times but that might be just his personality.

Not exactly a very likable bunch of cricketers this Pakistani side... competitive, fine but some of the stuff we’ve seen, this, other instances of verbals and trying to use gamesmanship and ani-sporting carry on to slow down the game to achieve a result. Pakistani players need a new boot manufacturer too, one that can make boots that don’t need to be re-tied every 10 balls or so.

Stokes out of England squad for the rest of the summer due to family reasons.

    Big blow for England.

His father Ged was seriously ill around Christmas and recovered enough to get home but it looks like he's not doing well at all.

England could go with Sam Curran to get a similar replacement or just have Crawley replace him and keep the bowling as it is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,800 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Sad about Stokes, I’d go with Curran, keep the balance of the side.

In fairness England are no angels either, Broad is right up there with the best in sledging teams and players.

I’ve no great issues with the odd word but it seems to be in between every over with Pakistan. Sledging is ok, but it’s just the regularity and the usage that they designed to slow down the game to increase the probability of a result that will suit them, it wasn’t mind games it was to try and draw the opposition into a conversation, to delay, same as the constant lace tying, that was a farce, shîtty anti sporting behavior.. That’s all ANTI sport...sorry I’m not having all that excused...I’m a sports fan, a cricket fan... if anybody or anything gets in the way of me being able to enjoy cricket, it’s fair game to be damming of it and whoever is responsible...Pakistan players.

Disappointing news about Stokes. Mustn't be good to have to leave in the middle of a series. He was playing as a batsman so Crawley will come back in. Bracey is there also, is Lawrence in the squad? That would be very tough on Crawley. Root back to no. 4 and rotate a bowler or two, Curran for Jimmy and Wood for Jofra.

Aye the test England won in the dark in Karachi was great payback for all the slow play nonsense! Even Bucknor had had enough!
