And unless you work less than about 4 hours a day, there is no benefit of 11kW work charging over 7kW if you have a car that can only take about 30kWh :D

    I disagree.

Very much depends on how many work charger points you have and how many EV's are vying to use it and how often you need it yourself.

Ours are time boxed. You cant stay connected to the charger all day.

And then there's the public charge points which are nearly all 11kW capable.

Like most things with EV's its down to personal need and preference.

Agreed if you can't stay connected to the work charger all morning or all afternoon and changing over during your lunch break

If you can't have 4 hours on the charger. it means you need to move your car to or from a charger during work hours. I wouldn't be best pleased as an employer if my employees had to spend time in work organising who can charge next and moving their cars to and from chargers on my time

Ideally you'd have more chargers than EV's but that has its own issues with cost and available electrical capacity and will become a bigger issue as time moves on and more cars in the car park are EV's.

Fine if you work at a power plant or data centre where electrical capacity isnt a concern but most SME's will have constraints on both those fronts.

Moving your car isnt a big deal time wise. Once your time is up, move it to free up the charge point. You dont have to negotiate with other employees. Just free it up. Takes a few mins.

Where I work, we do move cars once they are charged.. So faster charging would be beneficial in my case.

I think alot of companies are the same except for those that have a bank of chargers in large campus sites.... most work places would be happy to have one charge point at this point in time.... hence the need to free it up.

And sure anyone that follows Mad_Lad will know how useful 11kW charging is! :)

How does an i3 do at 110km/h, is it like a Leaf where the % battery drops like s stone :)

    Cheers

Here’s my post from April. Not exactly the depths of winter but should give you an idea anyway.
Done my first motorway trip in the i3 today since buying in February and also my longest trip at 125km!

So door to door was 125km.
North Dublin to the Sheraton Hotel in Athlone.
Left house at 98.5% and cruise control set to 100kmh and arrived with 25% remaining.

Roads were empty except for the M50, which meant 90-100 due to traffic.

On the way home I toyed with a few different speeds set.

    18.2km @ 100kmh used 10%
    14.6km @ 110kmh used 10%
    14.5km @ 120kmh used 10%

    All done using cruise control.
Normal operation, so lights, radio and climate control on.
Mix of rain and dry speeds and all about 10 degrees out.

    2016 i3 94Ah BEV.

i3 has similar drag coefficient as Leaf, not great. But it has a more efficient drive train and the 94Ah has slightly more usable battery capacity, so it will go a bit further on a charge. 140km of which 120km on motorways is not possible in winter though without driving a good bit below 120km/h. Did you consider Ioniq? You would not have to slow down in winter.

And unless you work less than about 4 hours a day, there is no benefit of 11kW work charging over 7kW if you have a car that can only take about 30kWh :D

You would make it.I have a 94AH with Rex and do 150km a day which is 100km on motorway doing 120km/h and arrive home with 5% it is tight do if you didn't have Rex as backup

Who are you asking? There should be no VRT at all on importing any BMW i3 (battery only, not the hybrid), as long as its value in Ireland is €35k max.

Sorry my bad. Thought I asked one person.

I know it's 0 on the bev. I was asking in regards to a 94ah rex.

Bought a 24kw leaf from NI a few yes ago and paid €0

The Rex is more complex. But as an example a June 2016 / 50000 Kilometres
    will be €1,218.

Does anyone have a link to where I can buy a 3 phase cable which gets me a full charge at home and 11kw on public chargers?

I am spending a lot of time in South Kerry and public slow chargers are the only real option I have.

    Call Phil in electricautos.ie

He sorted me out for a custom 15m type 2 cable a few years ago for cheaper than I could source it myself from the UK. And always good to support a local small business.

    https://evcables.co.uk/index.php/select-your-car/bmw/bmw-i3.html

This is where I got my 3 phase charge lead, make sure you get a 32 amp cable, if not, you'll be limited to 3.7 Kw on single phase.

Not particular to Used I3s, has this had a thread mention ?

I've also used that site, it's where I got my 10m coiled 32A single phase cable. Great product.

He also hooked me up with a second hand 6m Zoe cable for my i3.

    Top man.

I bought my copies, as a former engineer its fascinating, like a haynes manual on steroids and the most nerdy item I have ever bought.

Got my 94ah i3 second hand last Friday. I'm amazed at the milage I'm getting out if it.

Either I'm absolutely amazing at hypermiling or my previous 24kw leaf's range was was way off.

    Anyone else find this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,766 ✭✭✭✭unkel

Leaf is one of the least efficient EVs out there and i3 is one of the most efficient. So it's not surprising to me. Enjoy your i3 :)

I have a lead foot, and used to average 3.1m/kWh in the Leaf.

    I get around 3.5 in the i3.

And I make no apologies for my use of m/kWh.

I will say , enjoy the good weather. It's a very different car in winter.

My wife averages 14/15 KWH/100km, myself with the lead shoes get 18/19kwh/100km. Most of our journeys have a large portion of motorway and I will drive at 120ish GPS speed or 130 indicated :D

When I drive from North Cork to Waterville in South Kerry which is all N roads I average 13kwh/100kms.

The i3 is more efficient than the Leaf + the 24 Kwh will have suffered battery degradation too the, the 94 Ah i3, well, lets just say my 2017 with 91,300 odd Kms hasn't shown any form of noticeable degradation, on the dash "hidden menu" or by driving the usual routes. I'm amazed and it's one of the reasons I was thinking about keeping it, still haven't made up my mind. But Winter will make a difference as it does in all electric cars. But it's still more efficient than the Leaf even mine without the heat pump because I have the Rex the Heap Pump wasn't an option.

Congrats on your i3 well wear, it's a really excellent car to drive and makes me smile each time I take it to the back roads which is really every day lol, I love it still after 2 years 8 months. Time is flying.....

What's you Battery Kappa Max in the hidden menu?

I checked a couple of weeks ago and it was 29.5. Not much different from when I got it, it can go down to 29.2 and back up.

Ah, it's not that bad, I just looked at our consumptions and since May the Average Energy Economy is 0.14 kWh/km, I would not rank that in the least efficient category, standing up well as a 10year old body shape

Is it correct that the i3 does not have a heat pump?

It seems every EV has some issue or other, no heat pump in the i3, no battery cooling in the leaf.

It’s these two I’m looking at in terms of potentially buying one. The leaf has a decent size boot compared to the i3, and I think for some reason the i3 has apple car play but not android auto?
