What’s the law on dog seat belts/harnesses?

    Can’t figure out if it’s illegal to not have one.

    Not sure either, but it's madness to have an unsecured dog in the car. You and the dog are better off strapped in. My 2 are.

    I understand that and agree. Was curious about the Irish law on this nevertheless.

    I don't think there's a specific law relating to seatbelts on dogs... but... as I understand it, it is against the law to have an unsecured load/item in your vehicle, and/or have anything in the vehicle that could impede/distract you whilst driving.
    That's my loose interpretation of the legislation now, so be warned :D

    My understanding is that it has to be restrained with a harness or else in the boot with a screen.

    We belt up in a car in the back so as not to be a projectile.
    Would you want your pooch flying around inside the car when in a crash and the ambulance guy saying it was the one without the belt that killed everyone.

    I'm pretty sure there is a law that says they have to be restrained in a vehicle, it would be found somewhere in dept of agriculture under the welfare of animals.
    I'll search for it when I get a chance.

    The boarding kennels we use told us a client got fined for a non restraint dog. I forget how much it was, either 200 or 400

    Years ago I was stopped at a Garda Checkpoint, they were checking for tax and insurance, but the guard called over his colleague to have a look at my dog which was strapped in on the back seat. They thought it was hilarious.
    Good for them if they fine drivers with unrestrained dogs now.
