Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Options for older house

    Hi,


    I live in an older house (red brick, 1906, terraced, 2 story 3 bed/140 sqm).


    Currently paying about €1,700 p.a. for gas and electric.


    GFCH with a boiler that is on way out. Also doing an attic conversion + mini extension so looking at options on heating.


    We're most likely going to do

    • External insulation at the back (that's render as opposed to brick)
    • Better insulation in roof/attic
    • Solar PV panels
    • And obviously the extension at the back will mean modern windows on ground floor

    Been looking at a heat pump as option for heating but that would involve
    • Underfloor insulation - currently floorboards over original sub floor ventilation.
    • Replacing all of the original sash windows and doors. Windows doubled glazed about 20 years ago and had brushes installed more recently
    • Probably internal insulation on the front of house (on brick wall)
    • Sealing up the chimneys - all bar one currently capped, and we only use that occasionally.
    Which all starts to add up.


    Anybody have any experience with heat pumps (or other options) on an older house?

    Please don't destroy all the original doors and, especially, sash windows. They are a lovely feature.

    With you there, really want to keep the look but equally want something efficient
